HIGHLIGHTS OF 2002 CHESS TOURNEY
THE FIRST EVER chess tournament held in Palau was called the 2002 All-Filipino Chess Tournament from June 9 to August 4 every Sunday sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP). Fourteen players participated, four of them are women (Remy Mingo, Angie Parrado, Michelle Ramos and Karen Gennibeth Hernandez) in the 9-round Swiss system tourney with 30-minute time for each player to finish the game.
In the first round, Philippine Consul General Julius Torres lost to Eugene Koh. Eddie Grefiel, a civil engineer of Daewoo Corporation, defeated Mario Ramos and Koh. Parrado beat Mingo, Vincent Vergara d. Jimboy de Jesus; Jimmy Valenzuela d. Glen Navarosa; K. G. Hernandez d. Michelle Ramos and Mike Miguel, Jr. beat Amante Caballero later in the afternoon at Image Restaurant parking area. Aside from Mindzenty Auditorium, other sites were used to accomodate players.
In the 2nd round, Michelle's father Ben, Bong Alipoon and Noel Filomeno joined the group. Mingo beat Alipoon. He bounced back to beat Filomeno but lost again to Torres, who also won over de Jesus earlier. Filomeno lost his first 3 games.
Geoffrey Moro, also of Daewoo, joined the tilt. Roberto Hernandez joined also, and lost to him and to Valenzuela but won over Navarosa. Mingo defeated another male player, Caballero, but lost to Torres, who also lost to Miguel, Jr. Grefiel won over Miguel, Jr. and Valenzuela to lead with 4 points.
In the 4th round, Torres lost to Parrado in a special game held at Philippine Embassy in front of Desekel. Filomeno d. Ramos; Navarosa d. K. G. Hernandez and R. Hernandez defeated de Jesus in just 7 moves, the shortest game of the tournament.
Lemuel Bacor, a bartender and musician, joined in the 5th round and lost to Parrado, Vergara and Mario Ramos. He won over Michelle. Mingo scored another upset over time-pressured R. Hernandez, but her daughter Karen won over Vergara. Parrado lost to Koh but upset Ben Ramos to tie Valenzuela and Koh at 2nd place.
In the 6th round, Grefiel beat the 2 front-running women (Parrado and Mingo) to stay unbeaten while Valenzuela defeated Koh. Bacor suffered 2 more losses to R. Hernandez and Caballero. Moro scored 3 wins over Parrado, Filomeno and Navarosa, who also lost to Alipoon. Miguel, Jr. d. Ben Ramos and Caballero d. Vergara.
In the 7th round, Mingo defeated another male player, Koh, who also lost to Miguel, Jr.; de Jesus d. Michelle and Bacor; Mario Ramos d. Caballero and Filomeno beat Ben Ramos.
The penultimate round marked many firsts. Parrado and Filomeno played the first and only drawn game of the tourney. Grefiel suffered his first loss to Alipoon. Vergara scored 2 wins over Moro and Michelle, who beat his father, Ben. Torres beat Mario Ramos and K. G. Hernandez, who also lost to de Jesus. Valenzuela beat Moro to stay in contention for title. Grefiel d. Caballero and R. Hernandez beat Miguel, Jr. to stay in contention for runner-up honor.
The final round was the most exciting and complicated. Nine players were fighting to make it to the top four as Grefiel clinched the title with a win over Moro in a game held at Daewoo compound in Ngaraard. Alipoon lost to Miguel, Jr. but bounced back to beat Vergara and Valenzuela, who won over Mingo to clinch first runner-up. Mingo scalped another male player, Mario Ramos and finished with a 5-4 win-loss record. All her wins were against male players who all won trophies in the succeeding tourneys.
R. Hernandez won over Torres and Vergara. His daughter Karen lost his last 2 games to Caballero and Ben Ramos. Koh d. de Jesus; Filomeno d. Michelle. Parrado, one of 9 players who had a chance for runner-up trophy did not show up and finished with a 4-3-1 slate.
At the end of the final round, 3 players were tied at 3rd - 5th place. After applying the winner-over-the other rule and Sonnenborn Berger system of tiebreak, R. Hernandez finished 2nd runner-up, Miguel, Jr. the 3rd runner-up and Alipoon was the senior top scorer. K. G. Hernandez clinched the junior top scorer plum.
