Due to their strong performance in the last 2 tournaments, Bong Alipoon and Mariano Agustin, Jr. were allowed by the organizers to join the Class A division. Both of them just came back from vacation in Philippines.

     Because Eddie Grefiel and Freddie Dumlao are working on Sunday, they played their 1st round game, against Jose Misael de Jesus and Noel Filomeno, respectively.

     Both working at Daewoo Corporation, Grefiel prevailed against de Jesus, while Dumlao nipped Filomeno.

(825) EXPENSES - 2004 PALAU RAPID CHESS TOURNAMENT (Oct. 24-Dec. 14, 2004)

FIRST ROUND AT CHURCH YARD
     The first round of 2004 Palau Rapid Chess Tournament was held at Osiaol, beside Sacred Heart Church. There is no flat surface for the tables and there are grass on the ground which make it a unique set-up for a rapid chess tourney. At far left is Palauan bet Morton Sawaichi practicing with Ivan II Chess Computer. He defeated Menandro Manuel, who is playing with Joel Azana while Jose Omega and newcomer Gene Pastrana fight it out at the other end of the long table that was donated by Nilo de Jesus. Eventual champion Eddie Grefiel is playing against Jess Toldoya at far left.

(583) CRAIG SCALPS ANOTHER MASTER (TBN-July 25-31, 2008)

MENANDRO 'Boy' MANUEL has been Palau's top player in the last three years and being inactive from competitive chess in the last few months might be the reason of his skidding play.

Last Sunday, July 20 he was drubbed by Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich in a marathon 60 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening. A pawn thrust on the 25th move gave Dittrich a whole piece advantage that he sustained through the endgame.

After the last exchange of Manuel's pawn, Dittrich is ahead by two pawns with his king safely protected by the g pawn and his rook prevented Manuel's king from stopping the promotion of the h pawn.

In May 04, 2008, Dittrich snapped Tony Villa's 7-game winning streak and dealt the blitz chess master his first loss of the 2008 Palau National Chess Championship.

Manuel became Palau's 2nd National Master after capturing the 2006 Palau National Chess Championship with co-champion Manny Nedic. He was assigned twice in Yap that made him missed the first 2 months of the tourney.

His game against Dennis Lara, a cook at Palau Royal Resort, ended in a fighting draw after another marathon 75 moves of French Defence. He can't convert his one pawn advantage into a win in a difficult bishop-of-opposite color endgame because of Lara's excellent handling of the endgame. The game was held at PRR Dormitory 1 on July 15.

Manuel had won another long encounter against Jimboy de Jesus in 51 moves of Sicilian Defence on Saturday, July 19 at Jean's Boutique and Store and now have a 3-1-1 win-loss-draw slate. He is scheduled to face Palau's number 2 Jose Omega on Saturday.

In his latest email to Roberto Hernandez, Jan Berglund asked him to give him as many passport details of all those that might come into questions of going to Dresden, Germany (where the World Chess Olympiad will be held in November 12-25) now and/or for other future international chess events.

Hernandez will ask Francis 'Sno' Temaungil, Tutii Joe Chilton, Morton Sawaichi, Omega, Lara, Villa, de Jesus, Dittrich and Jaime Guevarra to fax their passport details to Mr. Berglund.
