IN TRYING to catch up with his games, Mike Miguel, Jr. suffered 4 setbacks against a lone victory in the resumption of Round 12 and 13 of the 2003 Open Chess Tournament that is being sponsored by TFCP (The Filipino Community in Palau), Image Restaurant and Sports Bar and Budget Mart held on March 30, 2003.

He lost to veteran-newcomer Menandro 'Boy' Manuel and to 2002 All-Filipino Chess Tourney champion Eddie Grefiel, bowed to Mariano Agustin, Jr. and Noel Filomeno.

His lone victory was against the "Drunken Master" Jimmy Valenzuela.

In the first 4 games of the day, Consul General Julius Torres was clobbered by Manuel; Agustin, Jr. was outwitted by Roberto Hernandez; Valenzuela took the measure of Bong Alipoon and Danny Dandoy was drubbed by Noel Filomeno.

Next to Miguel, Jr. to play the most number of games (4) is Agustin, Jr., who scored 3 wins over Miguel, Jr. earlier, Dandoy and first-timer Roy Rebollos.

Four players have played 3 games -- Valenzuela, Filomeno, Dandoy and Cyril Montel, Jr., who scored an almost perfect 2.5 points by winning over Grefiel, Dandoy and drew with Hernandez.

THE FIRST time that 4 drawn games have been played in any round of the ongoing 2003 Open Chess Tournament held at Image Restaurant and Sports Bar on March 09, 2003 which is jointly sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Margarita Borja Dalton (Owner/Manager of Image Restaurant and Sports Bar) and by Budget Mart.

Dubbed as "Draw Master" previously, Edgardo Enarsao halved the point with former champion Eddie Grefiel for the first drawn game.

Roy Rebollos and Jose Misael de Jesus also drawn their game while the "Drunken Master" Jimmy Valenzuela had a deuce with newcomer Menandro 'Boy' Manuel. Jimmy was dubbed as "Drunken Master" for playing better when he had enough to drink.

The last and 4th draw of the day was between De Jesus and Noel Filomeno. It's the 2nd draw of De Jesus for the day.

2003 OPEN -- CLASS A and CLASS B ROUND 1 RESULTS

Daewoo Corporation's 2 employees Eddie Grefiel and Freddie Dumlao played their 1st round games on Feb. 09, 2003 and both won their games.

The 2 Civil Engineers are working on the actual 1st round of Class A and B of the 2003 Open Chess Tournament, sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Margarita Borja Dalton --Owner/Manager of Image Restaurant and Sports Bar (the venue) and Budget Mart.

The first game on Feb. 16, fitted Cyril Montel, Jr. against the ever-improving Edgardo Enarsao, who prevailed over the former while Consul General Julius Torres upended again his co-employee at the Philippine Embassy in Palau Mariano Agustin, Jr.

Roberto Hernandez made short work of Roy Rebollos while Jimmy Valenzuela was upset by Danny Dandoy.

Menandro Manuel vs. Mario Ramos is draw and Valenzuela bounced back from an upset by Dandoy and defeated Rebollos in their 2nd game of the day. It's also the last game of the Class A Division.

In the Class B Division, Norbert Villanueva started fresh and clobbered Kris Ramos while 48-year-old Amante Caballero whipped 14-year-old Arvie Leynes.

The game of Ben Ramos and Allen Kangichi ended in a truce while Chito Vargas won by default over Vincent Vergara.

Tutii Joe Chilton also won by default over lone lady contestant Remy Mingo and in the last game of the day, Villanueva collected his 2nd win by outclassing Nilo de Jesus to lead the Class B in the early going.

Menandro 'Boy' Manuel has been to Palau for only 2 months. He talked to Roberto Hernandez that he would join in the ongoing tournament in the 3rd round of Classification. Roberto told him that he needs to play at least 2 games.
HE WAS ABLE TO PLAY 3 GAMES!

His first opponent is Consul General Julius Torres, the 2002 Open Champion. Manuel doesn't know that Torres is the defending champion. He showed class in his game and prevailed over Torres, who is also playing his first game.

In his 2nd game, Manuel played with Freddie Dumlao, co-employee of former champ Eddie Grefiel at Daewoo Corporation. Dumlao is playing his 4th round game and they drew their game after Dumlao prevailed over Hernandez in the 2nd game of the day.

It's time now to play Eddie Grefiel and Manuel won also! Roberto asked him, "Do you know the 2 players that you have beaten today?" He said no. Roberto told him, "They are former Palau chess champions."

Grefiel subdued Danny Dandoy with the black pieces in the first game of the day -- January 19, at Image Restaurant and Sports Bar, which is the co-sponsor of the event with The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP) and Budget Mart.

In the 4th and 5th games, Dmitri Kyle Villanueva and his father Norbert both lost to Chito Vargas and Jimmy Valenzuela respectively.

Mariano Agustin, Jr. played his 2nd round match and won over Roy Rebollos but lost to Edgardo Enarsao in the 3rd round.     

 Torres bounced back from defeat in his first round game and trounced Palau bet Allen Kangichi and Rebollos (his 4th round game).

Agustin, Jr. became the 1st qualifier of Group A when he touted Norbert Villanueva for his 3rd point. Both of them played their 4th round games.

Valenzuela followed suit and scored his 3rd point with a win over Danny Dandoy. Both likewise played their 4th game.

In the last game of the day, Agustin, Jr. is playing against his co-employee and boss Consul General Julius Torres. After their game, Roberto asked Agustin, Jr., "Who won?"
Agustin, Jr. proudly replied, "Who else?"

Roberto thought it's Agustin, Jr. who won and recorded a win for him. One week later, Torres complain that he read in Tia Belau that Agustin, Jr. beat him, which is not true.

Roberto asked Agustin, Jr. again and he said, "Who else, but Consul!"

Pioneer chess player Jimmy Valenzuela played 2 games in the 2nd round of Classification Round of 2003 Open Chess Tournament and got a split result.

He lost to Mariano Agustin, Jr., who works at Philippine Embassy in Palau together with Consul General Julius Torres, the recent champion of 2nd chess tourney in Palau.

Valenzuela bounced back from defeat and subdued Chito Vargas in the last game of the day held at Image Restaurant and Sports Bar.

The event is co-sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Budget Mart and Image Restaurant and Sports Bar, which is also the venue courtesy of its Manager/Owner Margarita Borja Dalton.

                  OTHER RESULTS OF ROUND 2:

Jose Misael de Jesus clobbered Roy Rebollos;

58-year-old Ben Ramos suffered his first loss to Danny Dandoy, a teacher at Palau High School; 

Amante Caballero got a 1-1 win-loss card by beating Edgardo Enarsao.

Chito Vargas likewise got a 1-1 slate by besting the 2nd Ramos of the event, Mario.

The 3rd Ramos, Kris, the son of Ben, was outclassed by Roberto Hernandez, for the latter's 2nd straight victory. 

Lone woman contestant Remy Mingo touted Allen Kangichi, for her even 1-1 win-loss record.

8-year-old Dmitri Kyle Villanueva bowed to his father Norbert for the former's 2nd straight loss.


3 points is all a player need to make it to Class A.     2 1/2 points is likely to make it at the middle of the standings.

Newcomer Palauan Norbert Villanueva contacted Roberto Hernandez about the coming Open Chess tournament to be held at Image Restaurant and Sports Bar from Jan. 12-- April
27, 2003.

He said his 8-year-old son Dmitri Kyle is also joining the tournament. The other 3 newcomers are Allen Kangichi, Roy Rebollos and 14-year-old Arvie Leynes.

This first tournament of 2003 will be co-sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Image Restaurant and Sports Bar (Margarita Borja Dalton - Owner/Manager) and Budget Mart.

TOURNAMENT FORMAT

1. There will be a 5-round Swiss system classification to determine the Class A and Class B bracket. The top 16 will compose the Class A and they will play a single round robin final of it and number 17 to 28 will play also a single round robin final of their own.
2. The time control is one hour for each player to finish the game. Players are required to annotate their games.
3. Registration fee is $10.00
4. The top four players in each class will receive trophies.
5. Special schedule is permitted upon agreement of both players and organizers.
6. Playing day is Sunday at Image Restaurant front area and if it rains, it can be resumed in the Sports Bar. Players and observers can order drinks and snacks from the service crew of the restaurant in pay-as-you-order condition.
7. In the penultimate and final rounds, players who didn’t show up will lose by default. If both players are absent, their game will be declared a draw by default.
8. Some players like Eddie Grefiel and Freddie Dumlao can play two games in one Sunday as they have only two Sunday offs in a month.

MENANDRO 'Boy' Manuel, a surveyor from Surangel's, won the Class A Championship of the 2003 Open Chess Tournament sponsored by TFCP, Image Restaurant & Sports Bar and Budget Mart.

He defeated Roberto Hernandez in a special game last Saturday, April 12, 2003 in 51 moves of English Opening. With the loss, Hernandez is battling it out to clinch 3rd spot with Eddie Grefiel of Daewoo, top seed Cyril Montel, Jr., Bong Alipoon and Noel Filomeno.

Philippine Consul General Julius Torres finished 2nd with 11.5 points, just half a point behind Manuel, who won 11 games, drew 2 and lost 2.

OTHER RESULTS OF CLASS A's PENULTIMATE ROUND:
     Edgardo Enarsao d. Mario Ramos; Ramos d. Mariano Agustin, Jr.; Alipoon d. Ramos and Roy Rebollos drew with Danny Dandoy via default draw.

Players are requested to be present in the final round on Easter Sunday to talk about the next tournament's site and format. Absent players will lose by default.

Dmitri's father, Norbert, finished the tourney with 7 points also with 2 games left against Allen Kangichi (6 pts.) and Tutii Joe Chilton, who has 5 points and 5 games left. 

Others who still in contention are: Ben Ramos (6.5) and his son Kris (6). Both of them have 2 games left, against each other and against Chilton.

World Chess Olympiad is being held every two years. In 2000, Istanbul, Turkey was the site and just last year, it was in Bled, Slovenia, where the Russian's Open team won it again with 4 quick draws against Yugoslavia in the final round. 

There is also women's team where China won in 2000. And just a few days after the Olympiad, the World Youth Chess Championship took place in Crete, Greece participated by boys and girls in different category.

Boys 18 years and under, 14 and under and 10 and under. The girls have under 12 and under 10.

Is it possible that someday, Palau can send chess players to participate in World Chess Olympiad?  

In some countries, players shoulder their own expenses just to be able to participate if they can't find sponsors.

CHITO Vargas clinched the Class B title of the 2003 Open Chess Tournament sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Image Restaurant & Sports Bar and Budget Mart.

His nearest rival, Tutii Joe Chilton, lost 2 of 3 games and now the fight for last 3 places are crucial in the last 3 games on Sunday.

Vargas finished the tilt with 10 wins and a loss, which was dealt to him by Chilton. 

Ben Ramos defeated Chilton in a losing position and earlier beats his son Kris, in just 9 moves. He is sure to have at least 3rd runner-up trophy.

Allen Kangichi, Amante Caballero and Chilton are the other players who have a chance to land in the Top 4.

The final round of Class A was a complicated one. Eddie Grefiel (10.5 pts.) won his last 2 games against Roberto Hernandez and Freddie Dumlao to finished 3rd. 

Cyril Montel, Jr. drew with Roy Rebollos and clinched 4th with 10 points. Hernandez and Bong Alipoon were tied at 5th but the winner over the other (Direct Encounter) tiebreak result turn up to be in Hernandez' favor and he finished 5th and the Most Improved Player (MIP) award. At the 2002 Open Chess Tournament, he placed 9th.

FINAL STANDINGS OF OTHER CLASS A PLAYERS:
     7th- Edgardo Enarsao (8 pts.), 8th - Noel Filomeno (8), 9th - Dumlao (7.5 pts.), 10th - Danny Dandoy (7), 11th - Jimmy Valenzuela (6), 12th - Mariano Agustin, Jr. (5.5), 13th - Mike Miguel, Jr. (5.5), 14th - Roy Rebollos (4), 15th - Mario Ramos (3.5) and Jimboy de Jesus with 2 points.

LAST 3 GAMES OF CLASS B (First name to play white):
     Dmitri Kyle Villanueva vs. Chilton; Caballero vs. Kangichi and Chilton vs. Kangichi.

Tentative format and site of next Age Group Chess tournament were discussed. It will be on May 25, 2003 at either Filco Thrift Mart or at Privilege Store (3rd Floor).

The time control will be one and a half hours for each player to make 40 moves and an additional one hour each to finish the game.

This is the real tournament time control which averages 4 minutes a move. 

Age Group of teenagers (13-19 years and 12 years and under) will have a double round-robin depending on the number of participants.

There will be a 5-round Swiss system to classify Class A and B. With Grefiel and Dandoy out of the next tilt because they'll go on vacation, and Consul General Julius Torres now in Canada, the Class A will only have 10 players to qualify and will have a round-robin finals. Number 11 and beyond will fight in out for a tougher Class B finals.

Ivan II Chess Computer will compete in Class A round-robin with its strength in full (Hard), Average in Class B and Easy in the 12 years and under. It will also rate the players.

This week's featured opening is the English Opening in which you'll just imitate white's first 6 moves.
       1. c4 c5 2. Nc3 Nc6 3. Nf3 Nf6 4. g3 g6 5. Bg2 Bg7 6. 0-0 0-0 7. d4 exd4 8. Nxd4 Nxd4 9. Qd4 d6.

Solution to last week's puzzle: (It is mates in 2 not 3). 1. f8=B! (Yes, promote the pawn into a Bishop) ... Kd8  2. Rd4 mate. If you promote the pawn to a queen, it will be a stalemate (draw ). If the pawn is promoted into a Rook or Knight, there is no mate in 2.
