INVITED
player Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II played 6 games in one day and took
solo 2nd place in the resumption of Palau Royal Resort Rapid Chess
tournament held at PRR Dormitory 1 on Sunday, April 06.
He
started with a sweep of 2nd seed Jaime Guevarra where in the first
game, Guevarra overlooked a mate in one that would have finished him off
in just over 5 minutes of play.
He played badly again in their 2nd round match maybe due to inactivity or lack of practice.
Next in line was Robert Tubice, who drew first blood when Aying failed to sustain his overwhelming advantage into a win.
He
trounced "Tube Ice" in their 2nd round match while Paul Garcia is
watching their game. They played practice game while waiting for another
available player.
Zaldy Ranopa's first tournament game of the year was spoiled by Aying when he lost in their first game.
He
had his chances in the 2nd game with a mate in one but he captured with
a pawn that leaves them with both a queen and a king and agreed to draw
the game.
With 4.5 points scored in just one day, Aying had 6.5 points and only a mere half point behind top seed Roberto Hernandez.
His
last remaining opponents are Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr., Eli Madrinan,
Laurence Abuton and Darwin Nisperos, who is going home on May 04, 2008
and will not renew his contract.
Garcia, on the other hand, has resigned and will be leaving on April 30, 2008.
Players
who are hesitant to play against Garcia are advised that if they have
not played him within 3 weeks, it will be declared as wins for Garcia,
the most feared player in PRR.
He
has shown the biggest improvement due to his everyday practice with
Ivan II Chess Computer, the talking and taunting chess machine that has a
rating of 2000 (United States Chess Federation).

Guevarra finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in the conclusion of
Palau Royal Resort rating chess tournament held on Halloween night, Oct.
31, 2007 at Dorm 1.
Four
crucial games were played on the final day. After Nino Flores lost to
Guevarra, Hernandez had a sigh of relief and virtually clinched the
title after Flores lost another one to Lara.
Paul
Garcia ended his surge for the top 3 finish when he lost to Lara in a
30-minute or rapid chess time control to speed up the game.
All other games were declared draws or defaults as players didn't show up in the final night.
The mostly affected player was Abe Francisco, who lost 13 games via default and finished at 14th spot.
Roberto 'Tube Ice' Tubice edged Laurence Abuton at 8th spot by just 2 points.
Arnel
Pama still made it at 7th slot and will receive a medal from Mr. Allan
Tuppil, the Food & Beverage Manager of PRR, who donated $100.00 cash
prize, a trophy and 5 medals for the 4th to 8th finishers.
Pama and Mr. Tuppil have a short vacation and will be back on the 10th of this month.
Awarding of cash prize and medals will be held after they have come back.
Flores and Guevarra finished with identical 28 points but Guevarra prevailed in the Sonnenborn-Berger tiebreak 359.5 to 297.
Hernandez will receive $50.00 cash prize and he will donate $20.00 to King Royal Chess Club of PRR.
Lara and Guevarra will donate $10.00 and $5.00 of their $30.00 and $20.00 cash prize respectively.
The
new ratings of the players who participated in the tourney was released
and Guevarra emerged as the highest rated player ahead of Lara as he
scored a victory once over Hernandez and twice over Ivan II chess
computer. Lara and Flores drew their 2 games with Ivan II to lose 40
rating points.

PLAYING
2 players at a time becomes a trend in the last week of Palau Royal
Resort rating chess tournament with Paul Garcia playing the 2 chess
computers simultaneously and beating Excalibur in 54 moves of Dutch
Defence and Ivan II in 19 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening.
He
lost to Robert 'Tube Ice' Tubice when he missed a rook check that would
have given him a whole piece advantage in the endgame.
Instead, he played passively and lost to his catalyst in a Bishop Opening game but still in contention for the top 8 slot.
Another 3 medals were added to the prize donated by Mr. Allan Tuppil, the Food & Beverage Manager of PRR.
OTHER RESULTS OF THE PENULTIMATE ROUND OF THE TOURNEY:
Top seed Roberto Hernandez played 2 players at a time and beat them both.
He clobbered Zaldy Ranopa in 42 moves of Modern Defence and survived
a strong resistance from Laurence Abuton in 31 moves of Sicilian
Defence.
Another
simultaneous game was played by Arnel Pama versus Dennis Lara and Jaime
Guevarra but lost both games one the eve of his departure for emergency
leave.
Ranopa
scored the quickest victory over Ivan II when he sacrificed a rook and a
bishop without any material consideration except to maintain his
initiative in mounting a bewildering attack.
He
unified his forces into perfect harmony so that when his heavy
artillery ignited the first salvo, the belligerent forces were in frenzy
dodging the spitfire. Pandemonium broke loose as continuous shelling ravage Ivan's territory and was mated on the 19th move.
With the tournament to be concluded on Oct. 31, 2007, many players will not be able to finished their remaining
games and organizers will decide if they will forfeit those games to
the players who refuse to play when asked to like Arnold Rivera, Abe
Francisco and Randy "Buhawi" Sioson.
Awarding
of cash prizes, trophy and medals will be held after Mr. Tuppil's short
vacation. He and Pama will be back on Nov. 10, 2007.
Two weeks after the awarding, a rapid chess tournament will be held
again with players having the pleasure of not annotating their moves
anymore.
On
November 18, 2007, the Knights and Rooks Chess Club (Palau) will have
their own rapid chess tournament which will conclude on Dec. 16, 2007.
If
there are still games to be played, it will be held on Dec. 23 to
coincide with KRCC Christmas Party and Blitz Chess Festival.
Jaime
Guevarra showed interest in participating as his time schedule can have
him play a game on Saturday and another game on Sunday, most probably
morning.

IT
WAS another hectic week in the resumption of Palau Royal Resort rating
chess tournament as 27 games were played during the week with Robert
'Tube Ice' Tubice scoring 3 wins and losing 3 games.
His biggest victory was over top seed Roberto Hernandez where he is down with a whole rook in the middle game.
Hernandez is playing simultaneous against other 2 players, Jaime Guevarra and Arnel Pama.
Against Tubice, Hernandez made a blunder pawn advance that allowed Tubice to attack the back rank.
Another mistake 3 moves later cost him the game in 38 moves of Sicilian Defence.
He lost by time forfeit to Guevarra, who used only 30 minutes of his time, in 57 moves of Sicilian Defence.
When they resume and analyze the game, Hernandez also lost in all variations.
He is lucky to draw with Pama when he forked his opponent's king and rook in 55 moves of King's Gambit Accepted.
Two
days later, Hernandez played another 3 players at a time winning all of
them -- over Arnold Rivera in 26 moves of Irregular Opening; subduing
Abraham 'Abe' Francisco and outlasting Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. in 66
moves of Sicilian Defence.
RESULTS OF OTHER GAMES:
Guevarra is now in solo 2nd spot after scoring 5 straight victories
over Ivan II Chess Computer in 49 moves of Benko Gambit; over Tony Penas
in 60 moves of Danish Gambit; against Manny Dulay in just 17 moves of
Bishop Opening.
He nipped Tubice in 58 moves of another Bishop Opening and dealt
Paul Garcia his 6th loss in 52 moves of King's Pawn Opening.
Pama
clobbered Erick Ventinilla in 27 moves of Reti Opening; Zaldy Ranopa
won 2 more games over Nino Flores in 35 moves of Bishop Opening and over

Flores

Bishop Opening respectively; Tubice outwitted Abuton and Suringa in 41

Hernandez

Accepted and in the last game of the week, Lara overcame a piece deficit
to beat Penas and stays in contention for the title.

LAURENCE
Abuton, a maintenance crew of Palau Royal Resort, surged into the top 3
spot in the resumption of PRR rating chess tournament after a week
break when he demolished Ivan II Chess Computer in 55 moves of Caro-Kahn
Defence.
He
is only half point away from the 2 frontrunners Nino Flores and Roberto
Hernandez and trailing him by a whole point are 1st round leader Jaime
Guevarra and Zaldy Ranopa.
In
the crowded 6th to 8th place are Dennis Lara, Arnel Pama and Robert
Tubice, who ended his skid by trouncing Arnold Rivera in 30 moves of
King's Pawn Opening.
In
solo 9th and 10th are Abraham 'Abe' Francisco and Tony Penas
respectively while Paul Garcia played only 3 games since coming back
from vacation, winning 2 and losing 1 to Ranopa in just 18 moves of
Bishop Opening.
He
made 2 weak moves in the middle game. He escaped with a win over Penas
when he forked his adversary's king and bishop to go ahead by with a
whole piece and
checkmated Penas in 44 moves of Sicilian Defence.
Excalibur
Chess Computer scored 2 victories over Penas in 36 moves of French
Defence and over Randy Sioson in 19 moves of Sicilian Defence (Alapin
Variation) to grad solo 13th place, just a point behind Erick
Ventinilla.
The
game of the week belongs to Manny Dulay when he executed a neat
deviation from Ivan vs. Pama game that resulted in a masterful conquest
of the talking and taunting machine in 41 moves of another Sicilian
Defence (Dragon Variation).
The
last game of the week was between Pama and Hernandez at 11:00 pm, a
very rare time of play with Hernandez employing his pet Modern Defence
to outwit Pama in 24 moves and tie Flores again for the lead.
Pama,
the elected Chairman of King Royal Chess Club of PRR, made a 2nd list
of pairings of available players but still many players can't make it.
The
other officers agreed with his suggestion that the tourney will be
finished at the end of this month and whoever has the highest score wins
the championship.
With this idea, players have no more excuses especially the ones who are contenders to the top 3 spots.
Lone
lady entrant Zueni Miraubueno asked Hernandez to cancel his name as
participant. She was given another chance to play on her day off but
failed to show up.
Her
16 first round games were all awarded to her opponents and if she like
to catch up in the 2nd round, this is her last chance.

TWO DAYS OF UPSETS,
FLORES WINS 8 STRAIGHT
SEPTEMBER
8 AND 9 were the days of upsets in the resumption of Palau Royal Resort
rating chess tournament held at PRR Dormitory 1 with Manny Dulay
upsetting tough newcomer Dennis Lara in 58 moves of King's Pawn Opening
where Lara suffered his only 4th loss.
Hours later, Robert 'Tube Ice' Tubice dealt Zaldy Ranopa his 2nd loss of the tourney with a 47-move conquest of Bishop Opening.
A
day later, Ranopa bowed to Laurence Abuton in 30 moves of Ruy Lopez and
elevated Abuton to 4th place with a 9-6-1 win-loss-draw slate.
And
hours later, Randy Sioson took the measure of Arnel Pama in just 25
moves of another KPO where Pama's mental toughness is not present as he
was routed by Lara in a shorter 18 moves of Queen's Gambit Declined.
But
it was a week of win streak for Nino Flores as he scored 8 straight by
winning over Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. in just 8 moves of Bishop
Opening; over Tubice in 33 moves of Giocco Piano and over Excalibur
chess computer in 25 moves of another Bishop Opening.
He dislodged top seed and idle Roberto Hernandez, who haven't played a game in more than a month.
A
member of the Board of Directors of King Royal Chess Club insists that
the 2nd round of the tourney must not continue unless all players have
paid their registration fee of $5.00.
Arnold Rivera joined the tilt last week and paid his due. He will play on Saturday against weaker players to gain momentum.

ABRAHAM 'Abe' Francisco failed to get the best record in the resumption of Palau Royal Resort Rating Chess tournament held this week at Dormitory 1 when he lost to newcomer Dennis Lara with a whole piece (bishop) advantage.
He sacrificed his queen hoping that Lara will capture with a back rank rook that will result in mate to Lara's king.
But Lara cleverly captured with the other rook and all things went wrong as he cannot avert Lara's own mating threats.
A day later, he won the replay game against 2nd seed Ivan II Chess Computer in 29 moves of Caro-Kahn Defence.
It put Ivan to the bottom of the standings with 6 setbacks against 0 win as it was beaten also by the elected chairman of King Royal Chess Club Arnel Pama in 30 moves of Sicilian Defence (Dragon Variation) where Pama sacrificed a rook for a pawn to weave a mating net.
In other completed games, Manny Dulay overestimated the strength of the other computer and lost in 36 moves of King's Pawn Opening.
Laurence Abuton checkmated Robert Tubice on the 40th move of Bishop Opening.
Paquito Suringa, Jr. dropped another close game to Tubice in 36 moves of Irregular Opening.
Randy Sioson proudly and boastfully scored his 2nd win by outwitting Dulay in 45 moves of another KPO.
First round leader Jaime Guevarra won 3 straight over Dulay in 56 moves of another Bishop Opening; in 32 moves of Two Knights Defence over Lara and by default over Sioson and grabbed 2nd spot from Lara and Nino Flores touted Erick Ventinilla to gain his 4th victory.
On Saturday night, the officers and members of KRCC held a meeting to address the reluctance of some players to play even on their day off.
It was agreed that a player will lose by default if he refuse to play without valid reason that is work-related.
Sioson was the first to lose when he refused to play without valid reason (work-related).
The strict scheduling was set to finish the first round of the tourney within 2 weeks.
Seven players are also asked to pay their registration fee of $5.00 as 2 paydays have already passed.
They are Zaldy Ranopa, Tony Penas, Dulay, Sioson, Suringa, Jr., Tubice and lone lady entrant Zuenie Mirabueno.

NEWCOMER Dennis Lara, who is only a month working as cook at Palau Royal Resort, grabbed the leadership in the standings from erstwhile frontrunner Arnel Pama after outplaying Laurence Abuton in 42 moves of King's Pawn Opening on Sunday evening in the resumption of PRR Rating Chess Tournament.
A day earlier, he took the measure of Excalibur Chess Computer in 52 moves of another King's Pawn Opening.
The weaker machine scored its first win by checkmating Robert Tubice in 28 moves of another KPO.
Tubice missed the mate threat on d1 after he played 28. Bc1 where Excalibur responded in just one second to the surprise of "Tube Ice" as other friends call him.
His one loss record, 2nd in the event, was affected as Lara overtook him in the standings after he subdued Zaldy Ranopa in 53 moves of another KPO on August 02.
Two days later, Ranopa bounced back from defeat and drubbed Erick Ventinilla in 62 moves of Bishop Opening, where Erick missed a rook capture that woul have given him a 3-piece advantage.
Lone lady entrant Zuenie Mirabueno dropped 2 games to Manny Dulay in 22 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening and to Randy Sioson in 32 moves of another QPO, where Sioson claimed his first ever victory against 6 setbacks.
He's got 1,000,000 'points' now as his friends tease him.
He also lost to Tony Penas in 35 moves of Ruy Lopez.
Tubice also dealt him the 2nd shortest game of the tourney with a 10-move miniature loss game of Caro-Kahn Defence.
Dulay likewise suffered another defeat from Tubice in 25 moves of KPO while first round leader Jaime Guevarra halved the point with Abuton in 51 moves of Sicilian Defence.
Guevarra's hours of practice against Ivan II Chess Computer paid off as he whipped the talking and taunting machine in 67 moves of Ruy Lopez (Exchange Variation).
Ivan suffered another crushing defeat as Paul Garcia massacred him in just 28 moves of Caro-Kahn Defence.
Garcia sacrificed 2 knights and a pawn to hunt Ivan's king to the middle of the board.
Penas scored another important moral-clinching victory over Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. in 39 moves of KPO.
Top seed Roberto Hernandez stayed idle with 3-0-0 win-loss-draw slate as players avoided early confrontation with him.
He already agreed to donate the $50.00 top prize to the King Royal Chess Club fund if he will win the tourney.
HE'S WILLING TO FACE 3 OR 4 OPPONENTS AT A TIME TO GIVE LOWER RATED PLAYERS A CHANCE OF UPSETTING HIM.
He played 3 players at a time on Monday evening. He defeated Tubice in 13 moves, Suringa, Jr. in 21 moves and Erick Ventinilla in 37 moves.
A 2nd batch of 3 players suffered the same fate with Abe Francisco losing in 14 moves, Guevarra in 31 moves and Garcia in 59 moves.
