(1164) TITO WINS 1st LIGHTNING CHESS TITLE (TBN-Feb. 22, 2016)

KKK Candidates for Vice President and Board Member
Roberto Hernandez and Baby Edna “Bheng” Mission are PCF players to run for office in the coming TFCP Election on Feb. 28, 2016 for Vice President and Board Member respectively. The 2 are teammates in the 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway. The 9-member Palau Team’s one-night stay at Heritage Hotel in Manila was hosted by Congressman Prospero “Butch” Pichay.

                TITO WINS 1st
        LIGHTNING CHESS TITLE

CURRENT No. 3 Palau chess player Tito Cabunagan has won 2 National Chess Championships (2011, 2012) to become the 6th National Master (NM) of Palau. His latest title is the 2016 2nd Lightning Chess tourney of the year that was held before the start of 2016 Palau Blitz Chess Championship on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 at Bethlehem Park.
A total of 12 players participated in this event. Defending champion NM Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. skipped this supposed to be 2-round only tourney, because his basketball team is playing its 3rd and rubber match championship game against The Originals. Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. and Felix Oling, Jr. also skipped this event due to different reasons.
The participants are Tito, NM, FI, Roberto Hernandez, Josef Karlo Moyet, Eugene Labarda, Manuel Mahor, Jr., FA Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps, Joan Gemota, Joel Gemota, Glen Navarroza, Rustum Cabuso, Arnolfo Inres and NI Jeff Balbalosa.
The registration fee is only $2.00 with the half going to the champion and the other half to the Palau Chess Federation fund. The time control is one minute for each player to finish the game with 1 second increment. After the 2nd round, the organizers decided to finish it on the same hour before the start of the 2016 Blitz Chess Championship.
Roberto won his first round game, lost the next 2 and won the last 3 including the last round vs. Tito, who is undefeated prior to their game. Tito was given his $12.00 cash prize.
Cyril was able to participate in the Blitz as his basketball game has ended with them losing to the many time champs Originals. Dennis Gonzales arrived before the start of blitz chess after attending the celebration of his 7-year-old daughter. The participant now is odd number (13) because Joel Gemota would not like to participate. The players were able to convince him to join to avoid having a bye player.
The registration fee is $5.00 and a one-year membership fee of $15.00 is required. Four players paid only a total of $10.00. They will complete the sum next Sunday on the 3rd, 4th and 5th round. The last 2 rounds will be played on Feb. 28, 2016, the date of the election of new officers of The Filipino Community in Palau where Roberto and Baby Edna Mission are running as Vice President and Board Member respectively.
They are both in the same party (Kalinga ng Kapatiran para sa Kaunlaran), where Max Joseph Asido, the incumbent Vice President is now running as President. Both Asido and Hernandez ran for Auditor in the 2004 TFCP Election, where Hernandez won with the 2nd Auditor, Jun, the Accountant of Mindzenty High School.
Before accepting the offer to run for whatever position, Hernandez usually inform them that he cannot attend their meetings if it’s night time because he works all his life as musician during night time. There are 2 Vice Presidential candidates in Asido’s ticket. He is Bonifacio ‘Nonoy’ Arganda, who is also an incumbent Board Member like Roberto.
The K. K. K. candidate for Auditor for this year’s election is Richard Aring of Airai Water Paradise while the 2 Business Managers are the incumbent Jovita ‘Baby’ Martin of Koror State and Joseph Verano of WCTC. The P. R. O. is Agustin Ragot of K. E. Company. The Sergeant-at-Arms position is already won by Giovanni Avila as there is no other person running for that post.
The 14 Board of Directors candidates are incumbent Lorna Asido (Max’s wife) of P. E. C. I., Lita ‘Adachi’ Campingco and Robert ‘Obet’ Aguilar, Joy Canete Biantam of WCTC, John Rey Collado of Belau National Hospital,  Dennis Jumawid and Jerry Layones of Computer Plus, Rhea Malonzo of PRA, “Bheng” Edna Mission of Ngarchelong State, Ligaya “Gay-Gay” Sara Osias of PCC, Lilibeth Pulido of Rdiall Delta, Lizel Rodriguez of MCS, Benia Secaya of Belau Modekngei School and Jose Rodriguez T. Senase of PRA/Island Times, who is also listed in PCF inactive chess player. He is also a former reporter at Tia Belau but transferred to Island Times a few years ago, to fill in the slot left by Peter Erick Magbanua, another inactive chess player listed at www.fide.com.

In the first round, Roberto subdued Joel Gemota and drew his 2nd round game with Mahor, Jr. where only their kings are left on the board. Mission showed up at the venue but didn’t participate. She mentioned to Roberto about her intention to join the Palau chess team to 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan together with WNM Angelica Parrado. The women players of Palau were not informed yet by Tito about the decision of the Board to have only a team (in the Open) because of lack of funds. Tito was assigned to inform the women players but it seems he hadn’t informed them yet.

(1162) 2-ROUND LIGHTNING & 3-ROUND BLITZ ON FEB. 14 (TBN-Feb. 15, 2016)

MEN IN RED, RUNNING AS PRESIDENT AND VICE PRESIDENTS
K.K.K. Party candidate as President Max Joseph Asido, middle, is flanked by his 2 running mates as Vice President Robert Hernandez, left, and Bonifacio ‘Nonoy’ Arganda during their meeting at PCC Abai on Feb. 07, 2016. Asido and Hernandez both ran as Auditor in the TFCP election in Feb. 08, 2004 where Hernandez won. Asido lost because there is a ‘nuisance’ candidate (Guillermo Asido) revealed only on election day to confuse the voters. This election on Feb. 28 might be the cleanest ever due to dedicated COMELEC staff headed by Chairman Issa.   (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

    2-ROUND LIGHTNING &
3-ROUND BLITZ ON FEB. 14

AS PER Palau Chess Federation Board meeting on Feb. 09, there will be a 2-round Lightning Chess competition in preparation for the 3-round Palau Blitz Chess Championship at Bethlehem Park on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14).

The registration fee for Lightning is $2.00 only with the half going to the champion and the other half, for PCF, while in Blitz Chess it is peg at $5.00. The time control is 1 minute for each player to finish the game with 1 second increment as what had been done in the Jan. 18 edition of Lightning Chess. It can be a 6-round Swiss system event if the participants are only 12 or less.
The Blitz Chess Championship is a 9-round Swiss system with a time control of 5 minutes and 3 seconds increment. Each player has to play 3 games every Sunday (Feb. 14, 21, and 28) with the top 3 finishers (not 5 as published earlier) receiving medals.
In the Board Meeting, it was decided that a Palau player is the Team Captain, a position that was held by Australian Jamie Kenmure in the last 3 Chess Olympiads –2010 Russia, 2012 Turkey and 2014 Norway. Mr. Kenmure is the Rating Officer of Palau, Guam and Solomon Islands.
The Palau Chess Team composition to the 2016 Baku, Azerbaijan World Chess Olympiad is: Board 1—Paquito Suringa, Jr.; Board 2—Tito Cabunagan; Board 3—Jeffrey Balbalosa; Board 4—Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr.; Board 5/Reserve—Roberto Hernandez and Team Captain is Dennis Gonzales while the Delegate is Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps.
In the 2010 World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, only Hernandez and Cabunagan made it but were not allowed to play because of a new rule that a team must have at least 3 members to be allowed to participate. Jamie was not allowed because he is listed under Australia. The Delegate, Mr. Jan Berglund, was not allowed to play because his passport doesn’t show any stamp that he had been to Palau at least once.
This unfortunate incident will not happen to Palau Chess team to Baku even if 3 of its members will not make it because a team captain (local player) can play if a team is short of players.
At the very strong Qatar Masters Open 2015, Chinese Yangyi Yu and World Champion Norwegian Magnus Carlsen finished with an identical 7 points out of 9 games but Yu prevailed in a tiebreak. The tournament is so strong that 5 players with 6.5 points each are tied at 3rd-7th. Ten players with 6 points each are tied at 8th-17th spot. But it’s very amazing to think that 21 players with 5.5 are tied at 18th-39th place! Included in this crowded group are GM Wesley So (26th), who changed federation from Philippines to USA, and former women world champion Yifan Hou (38th).
GM So was followed by Italian Fabiano Caruana a year later to make the USA a favorite to win the Baku World Chess Olympiad as they boast their 3 GMs, all in the Top 10 in the FIDE Rating list. They are Hikaru Nakamura, Caruana and So. The complete cross table with + as win, = as draw and – as a loss:

Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3824: 1. Qg7+!! Kxg7 2. Nf5++ Kg8 3. Nh6 mate.

Still nobody solve the special re-issue puzzle No. 3823. The correct solution: 1. Qg8+!! Putting the black queen out of action… Qxg8 2. Kd3! And there’s no way black can thwart the 3. c4 mate.

This week’s puzzle No. 3825: White to move and  mates in 3 (Solution next issue)
