In a rare display of fine sportsmanship, Enarsao and Agustin, Jr. granted Menandro Manuel's request to play the matches each has won over him by default in the previous weeks because of Manuel's tight schedule.

The rematches didn't change the standings as Agustin, Jr. won after Manuel blundered away a knight and his queen for a bishop and 3 pawns.

                RAMOS CONQUERS COMPUTER

MARIO RAMOS, 9th seed, who notched only 2 victories and a draw in 6 games against humans, proved his chess mettle with a surprise with over Ivan II Chess Computer last Sunday in what was the biggest upset win of his chess career. He employed the Four Knights Defence in which a knight is sacrificed on the 15th move.

He recovered the knight on the 19th move with interest (a pawn). After the exchanges of queens and 2 minor pieces, he has 3 unopposed pawns on the kingside that enabled him to win in 63 moves. Ramos, with a rating of 1460, thus became the lowest rated player to beat Ivan II.

In the only other completed Class A match, Ramos lost to Edgardo Enarsao in 30 moves of a Pirc Defence. Enarsao is now tied for the lead with Roberto Hernandez when the latter's opponent, Jimmy Valenzuela showed up late in the afternoon. Enarsao totes a 5-1 record while Hernandez is 5-0.

In the Class B category, Jose Omega won his first 3 against Ivan II, Ben Ramos and 3rd seed Mike Miguel, Jr. He also won by default over Genaro Manlaya and a carry over draw with Norbert Villanueva.

Omega has taken the place of Kelvin dela Paz, who is on vacation. Dela Paz default loss to Tutii Joe Chilton will be replayed this Sunday.

In the 12 years and under category, another new kid, Kelvin Cuenco, has joined the block of youngsters showing interest in the brain-challenging game. After losing his first 4 games against Chris Domingo (1-2), Ricky Camacho (1-2), Ivan II and Rodnnie Dizon (0-3), he won 3 default games over I. B. Misech, Michael Jordan (MJ) Ngiratechekii and Dmitri Villanueva.

Domingo dealt Jayrome Soriano his second loss of the tourney (2-1). He has the most wins for the day with 4 and 2 losses.

                BEATING A FORMIDABLE MACHINE

IT WAS NOT exactly the formidable Deep Blue that Roberto Hernandez tangled with last Sunday, July 27, 2003 nor the even more primitive Deep Throat, but it was certainly exhilarating to beat a chess machine who has been running roughshod over the field of highly-rated human players in the past weeks in the 2003 Age Group Chess Tournament being held at the premises of The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP).

Hernandez did it by checkmating Ivan II Chess Computer (rating-2000), despite having a lower rating of 1560, in 66 moves of a Danish Gambit to keep the Class A lead in the 5th round.

One point behind Hernandez is Edgardo Enarsao who beat Jun Mahor in 47 moves of a Sicilian Defence (Alapin Variation). Menandro Manuel, the 2003 Open Class A champion, bounced back from a poor start (0-3) and won his last 3 games. He defeated Cyril Montel, Jr. in 49 moves of Two Knights Defence and later beat winless Bong Alipoon . He is now 3-3 while Alipoon is 0-4 after another loss to Montel, Jr. in 30 moves of French Defence.

Mariano Agustin, Jr. escaped with a draw against Jun Mahor after the latter missed a pawn thrust at f6 square which Agustin could not prevent the promotion of the f pawn into a queen. It is the 2nd drawn game for Mahor against 4 losses while Agustin has 2 wins, 3 losses and a draw.

Mike Miguel, Jr. barged into the lead in Class B after scoring an upset win over 2nd seed Eugene Koh. Mike now totes 4.5 points after 5 games while Koh is in 2nd with 3.5 points. Jon Lagumen climbed to 3rd with 3 points after a win over Ivan II and a tie with Ben Ramos, who won by default over Genaro Manlaya.

TOP SEED Roberto Hernandez defeated Bong Alipoon  in 52 moves of Sicilian Defence to tie Jimmy Valenzuela and Ivan II Chess Computer for the lead in the second round of the 2003 Age Group Chess Tournament sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Cris Gonzales and Genaro Manlaya.

Ivan II executed all the right defence moves to repel Edgardo Enarsao's attack. It accepted Enarsao's knight sacrifice on the 25th move and held ground to notch its second win with the black pieces by using the King's Gambit Accepted.

Second seed Cyril Montel, Jr. bounced back from first round upset and mated Jun Mahor in 37 moves of a Caro-Kann Defence. He sacrificed a rook on the 34th move to weave a mating net that Mahor failed to anticipate.

In Class B, Ben Ramos is now in 2nd place with 1.5 points after winning over Amante Caballero in a special match played in the former's residence because the latter doesn't have a Sunday off now. The tournament allows special arrangement such as this as long as both players have mutual concurrence.

Other Class B games results: Mike Miguel, Jr. d. Jon Lagumen; Eugene Koh d. Kelvin dela Paz (default); and Norbert Villanueva drew with Tutii Joe Chilton (default draw).

In the 12 years and under category, undefeated Jayrome Soriano defeated Ivan II Chess Computer to amass 4.5 points while Chris Domingo won by default over Michael Jordan (MJ) Ngiratechekii who showed up late in the afternoon.

                VALENZUELA, KOH LEAD CLASS A, B

EIGHTH SEED Jimmy Valenzuela and top seed Roberto Hernandez share the lead again after victories over separate opponents in the 3rd round of 2003 Age Group Chess Tournament held on Sunday, July 13, 2003 at the parking lot of TFCP office.

Valenzuela won his third straight upset win over 2nd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. in 58 moves of a Sicilian Defence, showing that he has regained his form that won him the first runner-up trophy in the 2002 All-Filipino Chess Tourney.

Hernandez took advantage of Mario Ramos' blunder on the 41st move and mated him on the next move of another Sicilian Defence. Ramos drew with Jun Mahor earlier where both have a king and a rook left on the board.

Menandro Manuel, the 2003 Open champion, defaulted 2 games to Edgardo Enarsao and Mariano Agustin, Jr., after failing to inform the tournament chairman (Hernandez) that he would not be able to play. He is still scoreless after losing his first game against Ivan II Chess Computer.

In Class B, Eugene Koh beat Ivan II computer and continue to lead the group with 3 points. Mike Miguel, Jr. is in second spot after winning by default over Genaro Manlaya. Jon Lagumen defeated Ben Ramos with a series of simplification moves.

Alipoon drew with top seed Menandro Manuel to finish the 5-round Swiss System tourney with 3.5 points. Manuel has 3 points and still undefeated in 4 games while idle Cyril Montel, Jr. (3 pts.) will face Robert Hernandez (3 pts.) and Manuel in his last 2 games on Sunday.

Jun Mahor (3 points) qualified to Class A after beating newcomer Genaro Manlaya while Hernandez beat Jimmy Valenzuela in 65 moves of Danish Gambit.

8-YEAR-OLD SCORES FIRST WIN

The 2003 Age Group Chess Tournament fired off last Sunday, May 25 with 18 young players competing on opening day. Eleven more will join the fray on Sunday, June 01, who will be playing 2 games each to catch up with the rest of the field.

Also last Sunday, winners of the just concluded 2003 Open Chess tournament were awarded trophies and certificates. Snacks and drinks were served courtesy of sponsor, The Filipino Community In Palau (TFCP) Sports Commissioner Sergio Alemania.

As only one contestant registered in the 13-19 years old category, there will now be a Class A, B and C championships instead.

In the 12 years and under, four kids entered with 8-year old Dmitri Kyle Villanueva notching his first win by beating newcomer Chris Domingo, while 11-year old Jayrome Soriano defeated I. B. Misech.

In the first round of classification, top seed Menandro Manuel beat Roberto Hernandez in 58 moves of Caro-Kann Defence. Kris Ramos upset Tutii Joe Chilton in 34 moves of Lasker Defence (Queen's Gambit Declined). Edgardo Enarsao defeated Ivan II Chess Computer of another Queen's Gambit Declined.
