  KRIS, BEN, MARIO RAMOS LOST 7 GAMES OVERALL

FATHER and son Ben and Kris Ramos and the 3rd Ramos, Mario (no relation), lost all of their matches in the 4th round of 2003 Open Chess Tournament held on Feb. 02, at Image Restaurant and Sports Bar.

Kris was upended by Tutii Joe Chilton while his father Ben was drubbed by Cyril Montel, Jr., who played his 1st and 2nd game of the tourney, which is co-sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Budget Mart and Margarita Borja Dalton, Owner/Manager of Image Restaurant and Sports Bar.

In his 2nd game, Montel, Jr. clobbered the 3rd Ramos, Mario, who also lost to Menandro Manuel and Chilton to go 0-3 in this 4th round of action. 

            OTHER RESULTS OF 4TH ROUND:

14-year-old Arvie Leynes took the measure of Palauan bet Allen Kangichi while Roy Rebollos touted the other Palauan bet Norbert Villanueva, whose son Dmitri Kyle is absent today.

Chito Vargas and Nilo de Jesus halved the point. It was Nilo's 2nd game. He outsmarted Chilton in his 3rd game and the 4th game of Chilton, who seems to miss the cut for Class A classification 5-round Swiss system.

Jimmy Valenzuela won his 5th game and thus assured himself of a slot at Class A by thumping Edgardo Enarsao.

Leynes is on the brink of making it to Class A, after subduing fellow teenager Kris Ramos. He needs at least a draw to make it. A tough task as he might be fitted against Noel Filomeno and Roberto Hernandez in his last 2 games.

(854) Grefiel, Dumlao Score 2 pts. in Opening Day of 2003 Open Chess Tourney (TBN-Jan. 11-18, 2003)

                GREFIEL, DUMLAO SCORE 2 POINTS
IN OPENING DAY OF 2003 OPEN CHESS TOURNAMENT 

28 players have registered in the first tournament of 2003, the Open Chess Tournament, that started on Jan. 12 and was held at Image Restaurant and Sports Bar. It is co-sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP) and Budget Mart.

Eddie Grefiel and Freddie Dumlao work at the same company (Daewoo Corporation) and they were given special 2nd round games in the opening day of Classification round to determine the top 14 players that will form the Class A and the 15th-28th finishers for the Class B division.

Grefiel outwitted 14-year-old Arvie Leynes while Dumlao clobbered Remy Mingo, a chess pioneer in Palau. She participated in the first ever chess tourney in Palau in 2002.

In the 2nd round special games, Grefiel drubbed Noel Filomeno while Dumlao touted another pioneer Vincent Vergara.

4. Newcomer Roy Rebollos scored a point over Nilo de Jesus in 22 moves of another King's Pawn Opening.

5. Edgardo Enarsao lost to Jose Misael de Jesus in 37 moves of King's Gambit Accepted.

6. Amante Caballero was subdued by Danny Dandoy.

7. Allen Kangichi was mated by Roberto Hernandez in 34 moves of Sicilian Defence.

PHILIPPINE Consul General Julius Torres, with 8 points, now leads the Class A division of the 2003 Open Chess Tournament held at Image Sports Bar last Sunday, March 23, 2003.

He was upset earlier by 12th seed Danny Dandoy but bounced back with a victory over Roberto Hernandez, using his favorite French Defence.

Erstwhile leader Menandro Manuel is now at 2nd after losing his first ever game of the tilt to Eddie Grefiel.

Hernandez, with 7 points, remained at 3rd with a win over Jimmy Valenzuela in 38 moves of Gruenfeld Defence.

Bong Alipoon, 6.5 points, defeated Grefiel and stayed at 4th spot. At 5th is Grefiel, who lost another game earlier to Noel Filomeno, 2002 Open Chess Tournament's Most Improved Player (MIP).

 With his upset win over Torres, Dandoy climbed to 6th place followed by Filomeno and idle Cyril Montel, Jr. 

Freddie Dumlao won 3 games (including a default win), and now in 9th place followed by Mike Miguel, Jr.

In Class B, Chito Vargas (5 points) is now the solo leader after winning by default over Nilo de Jesus.

Co-leader Kris Ramos (4 points) lost to Amante Caballero. Tutii Joe Chilton (4 pts.) beats Norbert Villanueva (2.5 pts.) while Allen Kangichi (4 pts.) won by default over Remy Mingo.

56-year-old Ben Ramos (3.5 points) beats 8-year-old Dmitri Kyle Villanueva to stay in contention for the top 4 places.
The match between Arvie Leynes vs. Vincent Vergara was a default draw.

JIMMY Valenzuela has grabbed the lead from Freddie Dumlao and Menandro Manuel by beating Edgardo Enarsao in the penultimate classification round of the 2003 Open Chess tournament sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP), Image Restaurant and Sports Bar and Budget Mart.

14-year-old Arvie Leynes moved from 21st spot to the 10th after beating Allen Kangichi and 17-year-old Kris Ramos. Leynes is the youngest player with a chance to qualify in Class A category if he will win just one of his last 2 remaining games.
