FIRST EVER TEAM
TOURNAMENT IN PALAU
THREE years ago, I was thinking of a first ever team tournament in Palau composing of Team PPR with Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., CM Bernardo Garcia and Eugene Labarda; Team PRR with me, Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr., and Felix Oling; Team Surangel with Jeff Balbalosa, Angie Parrado and Glen Navarroza; Team PPUC with Tito Cabunagan, Neph Macasaet and 1 invited player; Team SDA with Rafael Paloma, Gladys Anne Paloma and Nelson Sisior; Team PMA with Jennifer Angeles, Ksau Anthony Whipps and Aome Angeles and a ‘mixed’ teams of Jun Mahor, Jojo Escapatoria and Baby Edna Mission and/or Dennis Gonzales, Rustum Cabuso and Mohammad Manik Hossain…
It didn’t happen but an original idea by the board members of the Palau Chess Federation could make the first ever team tournament in Palau a reality. It will be composed of Cyril Team, Roberto Team, Tito Team, Dennis Team, Rustum Team, Angelo Team and Bobot Team. All of them will be the team captain of their teams and they will select through drawing one lesser rated player each to their teams, one woman and one junior player.
To be selected as their women members are Angelica Parrado, Angelil Sisior, Baby Edna Mission, Jennifer Angeles, Joan Gemota, Destiny Sisior and Angelica Magno. In their junior side, the choices are Nicholas Nehez, Gian Gabriel Claronino, Michael Gulla, Aome Angeles, Rommel Gulla, Kyarii Sisior and Ksau Anthony Whipps (if he’s not available, Gian Paloma or Reece Reklai are possible replacements).
The lesser rated players to be drawn are Paquito Suringa, Jr., Glen Navarroza, Jojo Escapatoria, Jr., Wilson Barrameda, Jun Mahor, Leif Toribiong and Jeff Balbalosa (If he’s not available, Mohammad Manik Hossain, Nilo de Jesus, Elizalde Madrinan, Rafael Paloma, Christopher Kitalong, Neph Macasaet, Joel Gemota, Gabriell Garcia or Pedro Parmisano are possible replacements).
An extra member will be allowed to a team with this condition: he/she must be a Palauan chess player not listed and no rating yet at FIDE rating list. I will add to my team Morton Sawaichi, who has been inactive for 13 years and not yet listed at FIDE rating list. There is a very short list of Palauan chess players that are not yet listed and no rating yet at FIDE rating list but they are encourage to join and they don’t need to pay registration fee.
There will be a registration fee of $5.00 each member of the teams. This is for the t-shirt to be provided to all participants. That will be a total of $20.00 for each team. Surangel and Sons will shoulder the $80.00 for each team to be added as fund for Palau Chess Team that will participate in the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia from Sept. 23-Oct. 07.
The members are 1. Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps—Delegate 2. Joy Flores Whipps—Head of Delegation 3. Tito Cabunagan—Open Section Team Captain 4. Roberto Hernandez—Women’s Team Captain 5. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr.—Player 6. Rustum Cabuso—Player 7. Angelo Salvadora—Player 8. Santiago Tan, Jr.—Player 9. Leif Toribiong—Player 10. Angelica Parrado—Player 11. Baby Edna Mission—Player 12. Joan Gemota—Player 13. Angelil Sisior—Player 14. Angelica Magno—Player.
On Wed. May 02, 2018, after teaching piano/chess to my student Nicholas Nehez, we did a ‘mock’ drawing of 7 Teams and this is the result: Team Cyril—Jeff, Jennifer, Aome; Team Roberto—Glen, Angelil, Nicholas; Team Tito—Jojo, Destiny, Kyarii; Team Dennis—Wilson, Joan, Rommel Gulla; Team Rustum—Jun, Angelica Magno, Michael Gulla; Team Angelo—Paquito, Angie, Ksau and Team Bobot—Leif, Bheng, Gian Gabriel Claronino.
I am requesting the 7 team captains to be at Bethlehem Park on Sunday, May 06 at 2 pm for the final drawing of members of their teams. Or if they are satisfied with the mock drawing, then that’s it.
