(1517) MINDSZENTY HIGH SCHOOL AND MARIS STELLA ELEM. SCHOOL TO HAVE 2ND CHESS IN SCHOOL IN PALAU (TBN-April 23, 2018)

            MINDSZENTY HIGH SCHOOL
                    GRADUATE IN 2004
My daughter Karen Gennibeth Hernandez Cando, right, played against the youngest contestant of 2004 Non-Masters Chess Tournament, Georby Domingo. Karen graduated at Mindszenty High School in May 28, 2004 and pursued Nursing in Philippines. She graduated in 2009 and passed the Nursing Board Exam in March of the same year. 14 years later, there will be Chess in School at Mindszenty High School and Maris Stella Elementary School, where she attended also in 1995. How I wish there is already Chess in School during that time!      (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

  MARIS STELLA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
TO HAVE 2nd CHESS IN SCHOOL
                          IN PALAU

CHESS in School in Palau is expanding! After it started in Aug. 30, 2017 at PMA in Airai, the Mindszenty High School and Maris Stella Elementary School followed suit with this encouraging letter from Catholic Mission Schools Director and Principal of Mindszenty High School Father Rich McAuliff, SJ:

“Mr. Eric Whipps—Palau Chess Federation—April 16, 2018: Dear Mr. Whipps, On behalf of Catholic Mission Schools, I am requesting that Mindszenty High School and Maris Stella Elementary School be able to enter into a lease agreement for 10 Chess sets and 10 Clocks. We offered Chess as an elective to our seniors, and would like to expand Mindszenty’s interest in chess by offering a Chess club at Mindszenty for the school year 2018-2019 and by introducing Chess at Maris Stella Elem. School.

Thank you for considering our request. And thank you for expanding interest in Chess here in Palau. Respectfully, Fr. Rich McAuliff, SJ Director, Catholic Mission Schools; Principal, Mindszenty High School.”

Whereas Lessor agrees to Mindszenty High School to use 10 chess boards and 10 chess clocks.
The term of this agreement is one (1) year, commencing on August 30, 2017, with LESSEE having the option to renew for one (1) additional term of one (1) year each, which option LESSEE may exercise by giving written notice of such intent not later than sixty (60) days prior to the expiration of the then current term.

All equipments, furnished by Lessor will at all times remain the property of the Palau Chess Federation. Upon expiration or termination of this Agreement, LESSOR will return all the equipments to the LESSEE at a convenient time and location for both parties.

The Lessee shall use the equipment for free of charge but has the responsibility for loss or damage. In case of loss or damage, the lessee shall compensate the cost or replace the associated equipment. The equipment must be used for the development of chess players through the Chess in Schools program.

This Agreement will be terminated if either the Lessor/Lessee gives 30 days notice to each party. This agreement will be binding upon the parties including their successors and assignees.
Signed: by Father Rich, Eric Whipps and Ms. Lorenza Olkeriil, Principal of Maris Stella Elementary School.

In the 5th and 6th round of 2018 PALAU RAPID CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP on APRIL 15 at ERNGUUL PARK... Bobot Tan kept his perfect record (again!). Angelica Morales Magno didn't make it so she lost her game to Glen M Navarroza and to me. After the 6th round is finished, the 7th rd. that fits Cyril Tomas Almitante-Montel vs. Bobot was played with the latter prevailing after escaping with a win like what happened in the 2017 PNCC. Cyril lost also to Tito Cabunagan earlier while I lost also to Tito in the last game of the day.

Mohammad Manik Hossain came at 4:30 pm because he played already his 5th rd. game vs. Cyril last week. Rustum Cabuso is waiting for him and left before Manik came. Their game was reset for next week. Tito won over Bheng Codinera Mendoza; I defeated Jennifer Tubtub AngelesAngie Sisior scored a point over Leif Toribiong; Morton Sawaichi came late but his opponent (Christopher Kitalong) didn't show up so he won by default; Rustum had a bye,

In the 6th rd. Bobot nips Angie; Jennifer lost another one to Angel Salvadora; Glen won by default over Kitalong and Bheng clobbered Leif. Morton had a bye for another whole point. Next week's matches will feature Angie vs. Glen; Angelo vs. Morton; Manik vs. Jennifer; Bheng vs. Rustum; Kitalong vs. Leif and Magno will had a bye.

                Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 4435: 1. …Rxf5+! 2. Rxf5 Qxg3+ 3. Kxh5 Rh8#

This week’s puzzle No. 4436: Black to move and mates in 3 (Solution next issue)
