(1465) CHESS MATE IS 15 YEARS; http://palau-chess.blogspot.com is 6 YEARS (TBN- Dec. 31, 2017)

THE CREATOR OF http://palau-chess.blogspot.com CM JOSELITO MARCOS

The co-champion of the 3rd Palau Invitational International Chess Championship CM Joselito Marcos, right, came to Palau with his wife Nannete, left, and last-born daughter Jamie-Kirstie in Dec. 14-23, 2011. Three days later, he created the Palau Chess Federation website that became the tool for Palau Chess to be known around the world. Earlier this year, I just learned that Lito and Nannette has been married 35 years already, just a year earlier than my wedding with my wife Flor in March 11, 1983 (civil) and Sept. 25, 1983 (church).

                    is 6 YEARS
HOW time flies! It’s been already 15 years since the first issue of Chess Mate by Roberto Hernandez in Dec. 29, 2002 http://palau-chess.blogspot.com/2012/01/first-issue-of-chessmate-by-roberto.html

This is the 774th issue of Chess Mate while the website that was created by CM Joselito Marcos on Dec. 26, 2011 has 1,463 posts already by me and being view by 144 countries with page views of 296,462 as of Dec. 26, 2017.

The Music and Me column by Roberto Hernandez that started in Tia Belau, on March 15, 2012—April 18, 2013 has 282 issues after resuming its links to the PCF website from April 25, 2013.
As usual, the year 2017 started with Palau Blitz Chess Championship with Rustum Cabuso and me finished with the same score but he won on a tiebreak and Palau’s top chess player in the last 4 years Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. finishing 3rd for a bronze medal.

I discovered a new chess player with lots of potential—Santiago, Jr. Tan aka Bobot Tan and he showed how good he is in the 2017 Palau Rapid Chess Championship, where he finished undefeated for his first plum in Palau (gold medal). But he finished 2nd only in the Qualifying tourney for the Top 12 Division, with Angelo Salvadora topping that event.

Bobot snapped the 3-year reign of Cyril in the Palau National Chess Championship when the latter committed a blunder in their game being ahead by a whole rook. The loss is pivotal as Cyril lost in a tiebreak in the most exciting PNCC ever. The penultimate and final rounds have an effect to 8 players vying for a slot for the Palau Chess Team composition to the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia on Sept. 23—Oct. 07, 2018.

Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. didn’t make it when he drew his final round game with Bobot, who just needed a draw to clinch the title. A draw is also what Angelo Salvadora needs to qualify but he lost to Cyril that paved the way for Tito Cabunagan and Rustum Cabuso to make it to the team.

This 2017 PNCC saw the record-breaking junior player participation of 10 players: 1. Top seed Destiny Sisior, 2nd seed Angelil Sisior and 3. 3rd seed Kyarii Sisior. All other 7 have no rating yet: 4. Aome Angeles 5. Gian Gabriel Claronino 6. Gian Paloma 7. Michael Gulla 8. My chess and piano student Nicholas Nehez, is on vacation when the awarding was held in Dec. 19, 2017. 9. Reece Reklai and 10. Rommel Gulla.

Angelil won the junior division with a perfect 9-0 while Reece won by tiebreak (winner over the other or Direct Encounter) over Destiny as he nipped her in the 4th round. The 4th-10th placers are Rommel Gulla, Kyarii, Michael Gulla, Gian Gabriel, Nicholas, Aome and Gian Paloma.

Angelica Parrado-Sisior reaffirmed her supremacy in the Women’s Division as she clinched the title as early as 7th round with 9 wins and a draw. Baby Edna Mission is the perennial 2nd to Angie. She won the 2016 PNCC when Angie played in the Top 12 to have tougher opposition. Wilson Barrameda got a gold medal for topping the Reserves Division with Neph Macasaet and Joel Gemota in 2nd and 3rd.

The best thing that ever happened this year to Palau chess is the start of Chess in School at Palau Mission Academy on Aug. 30, 2017. I have visited them in Nov. 20 and 2 more visits during their Blitz Chess Tournament from Nov. 27-Dec. 18, 2017 where 16 students participated including Reece, who finished 2nd again! He lost to eventual champ Lancy Lazarus and although he won all his remaining games and Lancy had 1 drawn game, Reece only chance is to have somebody beat Lancy halfway to the tilt. But it never happened as the 2 outstanding players won all their remaining games. The other players are Yangi Senior, Lincoln Kikuo, Carlos Manuel, J-Lyn Singeo, Jaymee Remoket, Yumi Sadao, Moriama Tucker, Luka Ngirailild, Julianna Quintanilla, Turang Marino, Blossom Richard, Kazumi Chibana, Seth Paulus and Kukumai Ueki.

      Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 4328: 1. …g5+ 2. Kxh5 Qxe2+ 3. g4 Qe8# (Nobody solves it)                                                                       Nick Nehez missed the 2nd move. I might give him $3.00

This 15th Year Special Puzzle: White to move and wins (Solution next issue)
($15.00 each will be given to the first 2 persons that can solve this)
