(1447) BOBOT TAN UPSET TITO -- NOW SOLO LEADER (TBN-Nov. 13, 2017)

A DRAW WITH A MINOR PIECE EACH

My chess/piano student played a long and agonizing game with Gian Paloma not realizing that a king and a minor piece each (knight or bishop) is a drawn game for there is no progress in defeating any of them. I have to declare it a draw to stop their agony. Gian will be absent this Sunday, Nov. 12 and have to play 2 games next Sunday, Nov. 19 to catch up.

        BOBOT TAN UPSET TITO --
            NOW SOLO LEADER

PRIOR to the 5th round of 2017 Palau National Chess Championship, 3 players are tied for lead. They are Tito Cabunagan, Bobot Tan and Rustum Cabuso. Tito and Bobot are playing for the solo leadership as Rustum’s opponent, Paquito Suringa, Jr. is sick. Angelo Salvadora clash in mental combat with Jeff Balbalosa beside me and top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. Winless Manuel Mahor, Jr. is up against the only undefeated player Dennis Gonzales. Gonzalo Escapatoria, Jr. father passed away and he is on a funeral leave. His 5th round opponent Leif Toribiong agreed to reschedule their game.

Mahor dealt Dennis his first loss while Angelo scored 3 straight after losing in the 1st round to Bobot, who upset Tito for the solo leadership. Jeff lost 3 straight after drawing with me in the 1st round and winning over Leif in the 2nd round.

My game with Cyril lasted till past 6pm and Baby Edna Mission has to use her cell phone’s flashlight to cope with darkness in the latter part of Angelo-Jeff game and in the endgame of my game.

In the women’s division, Angie Parrado clinched their division with a victory over Angelica Magno while in the junior division, 2nd seed Angelil Sisior dealt Reece Reklai his first loss to assumed solo leadership while her 2 younger sisters Destiny and Kyarii also won over Gian Gabriel Claronino and Aome Angeles respectively. My piano/chess student  and his opponent Gian Paloma didn’t know that a minor piece each and a king is a draw, resumed playing without any progress. I have to declare it a draw to stop their agony. Rommel Gulla upended his younger brother Michael. He agreed to replay his game against him as he declared checkmate in their 3rd round game where there are 2 more replies that will not result in checkmate esp. the 1st one. They are about to begin the replay but his family needs to leave and set the rematch for Nov. 12 round 6.

Gian Paloma’s mom, Gladys Anne Paloma, informed me that Gian will not make it on Nov. 12. His opponent is Rommel. Just the right time to play the replay game while his opponent, the still win-less Aome will have to wait for their game to be finished before playing vs. him. The other games will feature Destiny vs. Angelil, Reece vs. Kyarii and Gian Gabriel vs. Michael.

The new FIDE ratings of Palau chess players for the month of November has been released and 10 (actually 11) players, all participants in the 2017 PNCC Qualifying tournament, have their ratings increased/decreased in accordance to their performance in that event.

Qualifying top finisher Angelo increased his 1643 rating to 1692, an increase of 49 rating points! He was followed by Escapatoria, Jr., from 1589 to 1617 (28 points increase); Mission stays at 1496 while Palau’s first Woman National Master (WNM) Angelica Parrado lost 20 points and dropped from 1551 to 1531; Leif Toribiong lost the most points (28) from 1439-1411; Jennifer Angeles lost 16 to slid from 1165 to 1149; Neph Macasaet likewise lose 8 rating points from 1510 to 1502; Mahor lost 6 (1525-1519) and Dennis got a minimal decrease of 1 from 1618-1617. Newcomer Wilson Barrameda finally got his initial rating of 1258. He won his 2nd match vs. Joel Gemota in the Reserves Division.

Dennis and I have noticed that Bobot is not listed in that list. He is the 2017 Palau Rapid Chess Champion with rapid rating of 1734. I asked IA/IO Jamie Kenmure, Palau’s Rating Officer, about this and his enlightening reply is as follow:

From: Jamie Kenmure <jchess7@gmail.com>Date: Saturday, November 11, 2017 Subject: What happened to Tan, Santiago Jr.’s record in Qualifying?
To: Roberto Hernandez robert_flor31154@yahoo.com> Hi Roberto, Please look at the following link
https://ratings.fide.com/ individual_calculations.phtml? idnumber=16601661&rating_ period=2017-11-01        Tan, Santiago Jr. did not play 5 rated players in the tournament. Yes he has a rapid rating but that will not be a reason to get a classical/standard rating. At the end of this tournament, he will receive a classical/standard rating for sure. Also, can you tell me how many players are in the women's and junior
division.

I have heard there are only 5 women's players and if this is the case, you should make it a double round robin. Can you give me a list of all the results as well please from Swiss Perfect by sending me the files of all tournaments.
