(1402) BOBOT TAN STILL UNDEFEATED (TBN-July 17, 2017)

POTENTIAL TEAM MEMBER TO 2018 W.C.O. BATUMI, GEORGIA?
Santiago Jr. C. Tan, aka Bobot Tan, left, dealt Tito Cabunagan his only loss in the resumption of play of the 2017 Palau Rapid Chess Championship. The newcomer 'dark horse' of the tourney needs to beat Jeff Balblosa, 2nd from left, to clinch the title in his very first participation in Palau chess tournament. At right is top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., who he had defeated in the earlier round. If he qualified in the Qualifying Tourney in Sept., he has a chance to be a member of Palau Chess team to 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia if he would finish in the top 4 of the Top 12 Division of 2017 PNCC.

     BOBOT TAN STILL UNDEFEATED

THE DISCOVERY of more chess talents in Palau continues as newcomer Santiago Jr. C. Tan, aka Bobot Tan, whose been to Palau for just a few weeks, still dominating the field of 12 players in the resumption of Rounds 4-7 of 2017 Palau Rapid Chess Championship at Bethlehem Park held last Sunday, July 09, 2017 that started at 2pm.

Bobot drubbed 2nd seed Tito Cabunagan in the 4th round, won by default over Angelica Magno in the 5th round, outwitted Angelo Salvadora in the 6th and won again by default over Paquito Suringa, Jr., who overslept at 2pm and didn’t proceed to the venue to play his other later games.

I won over Angie Sisior in 33 moves of Sicilian Defense and against Jennifer Tubtub Angeles in a shorter 20 moves of Caro Khan Defense but lost to Manuel Mahor where I am ahead by 2 pieces and lost with him having only 2 seconds left in his clock and I have no more time. Jeff Balbalosa defeated top seed Cyril but lost to Tito, who scored another victory over Angie.

Another win by Jeff, Tito and Cyril over Angelo, Jun and Jennifer respectively in the 7th round put them in the running for the title.

A blitz chess contest among 6 players (Roberto HernandezCyril Tomas Almitante-MontelJeff Balbalosa, Angel Salvador, Manuel Mahor and Tito Cabunagan) ensued after the round 7.

Tito is undefeated after 6 rounds, but lost and was swept by Jeff and Cyril in his last 4 games to finished 4th with 5 1/2 points behind co-champions Cyril and Jeff, both with 8 points, and they split the $12.00 cash prize from registration fee of $2.00.

I finished 3rd with 6 1/2 points, Salvadora, 2 points while Jun Manuel Mahor had 0 point. He was swept by all of his opponents.

A funny incident took place when I lost my first game w/ Cyril as I capture his bishop with my king, which I thought was a queen. Deja vu as Cyril captured my bishop with his king which he thought also as a queen!

                Rounds 8, 9, 10, 11 will be played on Sunday, July 16.

                Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 4420: 1. …Qxg3+!! 2. hxg3 Bf3 3. Any move by White Rh1#
