(1388) MUSIC AND ME (April 20, 2017) DYAN CASTILLLEJO AND MARK NELSON IN PALAU -- 2004

I MISSED THE CHANCE TO HAVE DYAN CASTILLEJO SIGNED THIS PAGE OF MY JINGLE SONGBOOK IN SEPT. 2004.

Dyan Castillejo and Mark Nelson, the hosts of ABS-CBN Sports Unlimited, visited Palau to shoot some segments of their show in Sept. 2004.
They have dinner at Image Restaurant, where I am the pianist-DJ there for 13 years.
During their dinner, the staff of Image Restaurant had a good time having photos with the 2 Philippine celebrities. I had some photos also with them and my wife Flor. I played for them some Filipino and international songs.
In the later part of their dinner, I have given Dyan the 4 video cassettes of "Chess in Palau 2002-2004" in which she said she will review for possible feature in Sports Unlimited.
I featured them in the 92nd issue of Chess Mate:

Dyan Castillejo and Mark Nelson (seated), hosts of weekly Philippine TV Show Sports Unlimited, pose with Tia Belau chess columnist Roberto Hernandez and his wife Flor during a dinner at the Image Restaurant in Meyuns after three days of shooting in Palau.

FIRST TIMER Dennis Gonzales got his baptism of fire in his first ever tournament games. He lost his first 4 games against Ivan II Chess Computer (twice), against Mariano Agustin, Jr. and vs. Jerry Sermeno.

Gonzales celebrated his birthday with 9 friends last Wednesday at Image Restaurant singing karaoke while having dinner and Roberto Hernandez is operating the karaoke while practicing with Ivan II.

Before they left, Gonzales approached Hernandez and said he is interested in joining the chess tournament that is one month away from concluding.

He was offered to participate in Class B and have to play at least 3 games every week. He said the first 2 games with Ivan II drained him to the fullest as he had the initiative in the first game but lost it eventually.

He was not able to play three other Class B players waiting in line -- Morton Sawaichi, top seed Jose Omega and Den Canaria.

In the other Class B game, Agustin, Jr. defeated Sermeno to share the lead with Ivan II who is still undefeated w/6 straight wins.

Agustin, Jr. now has a 6-3 win-loss record while Sermeno is 4-4.

In Class A division, Cyril Montel, Jr. suffered his 5th straight defeat from Hernandez in 39 moves of a Modern Defence. It seems Hernandez found a winning defense for Black as he won all of his games with the black pieces by using the Modern Defence against Jimmy Valenzuela and Ivan II.

Montel, Jr. later scored half point by drawing against defending champion Jess Toldoya who was a pawn ahead in queen and pawns endgame.

After Montel, Jr. recovered the pawn, Toldoya offered a draw as he was ready for a perpetual check.

In the last game of the day of the 2004 Open Chess tourney sponsored by Nestor Canaria held this Sunday, September 19, Valenzuela scored his first ever win over Ivan II Chess Computer in their Giocco Piano game.

He has now a 1-2-1 win-loss-draw record against the formidable machine and finished the tourney with a 4-2-2 slate. He is now a top candidate for at least 2nd runner-up depending on the results of Hernandez vs. Eddie Grefiel match on the 7th round and against Toldoya in the final round.

Toldoya (2-1-2) and Hernandez (4-2-0) are the two players who can catch up with Grefiel (5-0-1).

With the addition of another player in the Class B division, Hernandez has decided to add another trophy for Class B courtesy of Nestor Canaria, who is also donating $60.00 as cash prize for Class A ($30.00 for the champion, $20.00 for the first runner-up and $10.00 for the 2nd runner-up).

The additional $15.00 from Class A players for cash prize was cancelled and will be discussed before the next tournament.

It was a few years later that I discovered that Dyan has been featured in a commercial of Soft-Dri Skin deodorant in one of my Jingle Songhits. If I had known it, I should have been asked her to sign it.

She's gone a long way now and has been to main figure in the broadcasting of all Manny Pacquiao's boxing matches.

(1386) MUSIC AND ME (April 13, 2017) CLASSICAL PIANIST -- JAPANESE LADY GUEST

On Feb. 10, 2017, we have two groups of Japanese guests at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort. The first group have given me Chivas Regal drink for 2 consecutive nights.

Then a group of Japanese family came with 3 kids. The 3 kids are touching the keys of the keyboard and I asked 2 of them to sit beside me and I will teach them how to play the fun way. Later, the young lady asked me if she can play the piano and...

I let this Japanese lady to use the new keyboard at Breeze Bar of Palau Royal Resort after I "teach" 3 Japanese kids. The lady knows that the tune of the keyboard is not in standard key. She plays very good classical music! Beside their table, another group of Japanese gave me a Chivas Regal drink in 2 consecutive nights. I felt dizzy in the first time because I drank it in just 30 minutes. I'm a slow drinker. In 1987-1989 in Bahrain, although I can drink as many as I can for free, I took only one sip of Foster beer after every song that I play with Antonis Sergio, my bouzuki player partner from Cyprus.

The lady plays all classical music. She is very good and doesn't make mistakes. It seems that she is a disciplined classical music player.

(1385) ROB, ANGIE, TITO & JENNIFER TOPPED ARBITERS' SEMINAR EXAM (TBN-May 29, 2017)

SITTING CLOSE TO LECTURER LIKE IN 2014
I am the only one in the middle of the U-shaped table arrangement during the Arbiters’ Seminar and exam facing FIDE Lecturer Jamie Kenmure. I topped also this seminar like in 2014 Trainers’ Seminar. At right are the other 3 that passed the exam—Tito Cabunagan, Jennifer Angeles and Angelica Parrado. Completing the other exam takers in the same order are Rustum Cabuso, Rafael Paloma, Baby Edna Mission, Paquito Suringa, Jr., Manuel Mahor, Jr., Angelo Salvadora, Eugene Labarda, Dennis Gonzales and Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr.

ROBERTO, ANGIE, TITO & JENNIFER
 TOPPED ARBITERS' SEMINAR

AT THE World Chess Federation (FIDE) website www.fide.com the results of the exam for the Arbiters’ Seminar by Jamie Kenmure was published as follows:

FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar in Koror, Palau – RESULTS   Wednesday, 24 May 2017 12:49
From 12 to 19 May 2017 a FIDE Arbiters’ Seminar was organized in Koror, Palau, by the Palau Chess Federation, in cooperation with the Asian Chess Federation and under auspices of FIDE.

The Lecturer of the seminar was IA Jamie Kenmure (AUS), FIDE Lecturer.

The venue of the Seminar was the Mason’s Hardware Do-It Center in Koror.
The lectures were in English language. Twenty Four (24) people from Palau participated in the Seminar and thirteen (13) of them participated in the examination test, held after the end of the lectures. The following succeeded in the test and they will be awarded a norm for the title of the FIDE Arbiter, after the approval of the next FIDE Presidential Board or Congress:

Hernandez, Roberto

16600010

PLW
Parrado, Angelica

16600215

PLW
Cabunagan, Tito

16600169

PLW
Angeles, Jennifer

16601556

PLW

IA Takis Nikolopoulos
Chairman
FIDE Arbiters’ Commission

The FIDE I. D. Number after my name—16600010 means that Palau was the 166th member of FIDE and the 00010 after the 166 is the beginning number of Palau registered chess players cancelling the last number. This means that I am the first member of Palau Chess Federation in the FIDE list. Tito is No. 16, Angie—No. 21 and Jennifer—No. 155.

A norm will be awarded to us. Additional norms (3) can be achieved if we will be Chief Arbiters or Deputy Chief Arbiters in 3 FIDE rated tournaments (national or international). The coming 2017 Palau National Chess Championship in September is a stepping stone to get FA norm.

Before the start of the exam in May 18, FIDE Lecturer IA Jamie Kenmure announced to the exam takers that Palau will be the first Micronesian country to teach chess from as early as Kindergarten stage. He will be back in a few months to follow-up in this matter.

During the FIDE Trainers’ Seminar conducted by FIDE C.E.O. Geoffrey Borg in April 2014, I was sitting also closest to the lecturer as I did in this recent seminar. I topped also that 2014 Trainers’ Seminar that resulted in me getting a FIDE Instructor (FI) title while the other 6 attendees got National Instructor (NI) titles and the other 7, Developmental Instructor (DI) titles. I can legitimately teach chess in all 181-member countries of FIDE.
