A TOTAL of 13 players have registered in the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) chess tourney that started on August 18 at the church premises with the top 2 seeds Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr., a cook at Palau Royal Resort, and Abraham 'Abe' Francisco, the succeeding chairman of King Royals Chess Club of PRR, winning their first classification matches.
They both have an approximate rating of 1670 that they have obtained in joining the PRR rating chess tourney last year.
The other rated player Arnold Rivera, the chief cafeteria cook, had a 1608 rating and opted to play scrabble, the other tournament board game together with dama (Chinese checker) and dart, where Pax also competes.
The ever-busy Ambassador of Philippines to Palau Ramoncito Marino surprised everybody by joining the chess tilt.
He didn't play a tournament game but won on practice games with other participants.
Their pastor Eric is also considered a top candidate to land in the Class A division which will consists of the top half finishers with the Class B having their own double round-robin finals of the bottom half of the field.
Other results of other games will be published next issue.
Francisco succeeded the position of Arnel Pama, who left for Qatar to be with his wife, who also worked at PRR.
The tightly-contested election was decided by only one vote during the PRR rating chess tourney topped by Roberto Hernandez, Dennis Lara, another cook, and Jaime Guevarra, pastry chef.
Had Abe finished that tourney, he could have landed in the top 8. He lost his last 9 games by default.
