PASTRANA'S 1st AND ONLY BLITZ TITLE
 

THERE ARE a lot of blitz chess competition in Palau that Eugenio Pastrana had joined but he never finished at the top in any of them except in the pre-National Chess Championship (2006) Blitz Chess competition that was held in his Jean’s Boutique and Store on March 05, 2006.

                As usual, it’s a double round-robin format with 10 minutes time control (no increment because Palau Chess Federation is using mechanical clocks at that time).

 Registration fee is peg at $5.00 with the champion/s keeping the half of it and the other half will be spent for drinks of players. In some occasions, the drinks were already consumed and the tourney is not yet finished. Some players, like Manuel Nedic, Consul General Julius Torres, and Eddie Grefiel have spent their champions’ purse to buy another round of drinks for players or whatever the cost of the rest of the purse.

                The participants are Pastrana, Roberto Hernandez, Cyril Montel, Jr., blitz chess specialist Edwin Eti and Jimmy ‘the Drunken Master’ Valenzuela. Because of the small purse for the champion ($12.50), it was decided no drinks will be given to the players while playing and the champion/s will keep all the cash prizes.

                Pastrana got his first ever chess title (in any time control) with a 5-1-2 win-loss-draw record. BUT, Hernandez tied him for top honor with a 6-2-0 slate. All blitz tourneys in Palau don’t use tie break with the tied players splitting the cash, which happened to Eugenio and Roberto.

                Eti finished the tilt with 3-5-0 card while Montel, Jr. and Valenzuela sported an identical 2-5-1 record. The blitz tourney was held 2 weeks prior to the opening round of 2006 PNCC.

CYRIL SEIZES BACK THE TOP CHESS PLAYER OF PALAU POSITION

                    The time is ripe for Palau’s new No. 1 chess player Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., 2^nd from right, to be the 2^nd FIDE titled player of Palau. It can be achieved in the 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan to be held from Sept. 17-30, 2016. He should be playing at Board 3 or 4 as what have done by Papua New Guinea, Macau, Plaau and other low-ranking countries.

THE FIRST ever lightning chess tournament in Palau was held on Jan. 18, 2016 (Monday) at Surangel’s Campaign Headquarters at Mason’s Hardware premises. Sixteen players participated in the 9-round Swiss system event, which was later become an 8-round contest due to lack of participants of at least 18 players.

                Registrations fee is peg at $5.00 with Roberto Hernandez as the first one to pay. The other contestants are top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., Dennis Gonzales, Jeff Balbalosa, Rustum Cabuso, Eugene Labarda, Josef Karlo Moyet, Angie Parrado, her 2 daughters Angelil and Destiny Sisior, Baby Edna Mission, Arnolfo Inres, Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps, Glen Navarroza, Manuel Mahor, Jr. and Roxanne Parco. It’s the first time in any Palau chess tournament that 5 women are participating in an Open event where there are 16 contestants or about 1/3 of participants.

                The original plan for this event is the Bullet Chess Championship which has a time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment. Roberto, Paquito Suringa, Jr. and Felix Oling, Jr., all of Palau Royal Resort, spent a lot of practice time in this format. BUT 2 WEEKS PRIOR TO THE FIRST TOURNEY OF 2016, IT WAS CHANGED TO 1 minute + 1 second increment format, thus the Lightning – the fastest in the world. Paquito and Roberto were able to practice for just an hour in this format, which is not enough.

                The change of venue, which was announced 2 days prior to the event, also affects the availability of Suringa, Jr. and Oling, Jr. as they don’t have a ride to the new venue. The old venue, the Surangel’s Construction office, is just a 2-minute walk from PRR. Joan Gemota, who likes blitz chess, is not comfortable also with the lightning chess format. She is also expecting Bullet first before Lightning.

                At Board 1 of the first round, Montel, Jr. is very much ahead in material when their clock turns into 00. Cyril doesn’t like to accept a draw due to technical problem and it was decided to let them play a new game since it’s a very short time control. Cyril still prevails to begin his quest for a record 5^th straight Palau chess championship.

                Prior to the first round, Roberto announced some important rules of Lightning Chess: Touch move rules is applied; the player must say the word “check” whenever he/she is attacking his opponent king; an illegal move automatically cost a player that game; in castling, the must touch the king first before the rook; if he touch the rook first, he/she must move the rook instead of castling; it is also advised not to used both hands in castling; the hand that a player is using in making a move must be also the hand that he/she will use in pressing the time clock.

                After 8 rounds, Cyril topped the event and won the champion’s purse of $25.00. Rustum Cabuso clinched the 2^nd spot for $20.00 cash prize and Jeff Balbalosa, who is doing the meticulous job of arranging the pairings while also a participant, finished 3^rd and won $15.00.

THE FIRST ever chess tournament in Palau was held in June 09, 2002—(1) the All-Filipino Chess Tournament in which Daewoo Civil Engineer Eddie Grefiel won the 9-round Swiss system event. It concluded on August 04 and more than a month later, the 2^nd tourney, (2) the 2002 TFCP Open, was organized on Sept. 15-Dec. 1 in which Consul General Julius Torres won the single round-robin event.

                The first tourney of 2003, (3) the Open, Menandro Manuel topped the Class A and Chito Vargas clinched the Class B championship that was held on Jan. 12-April 27.

She stopped having piano lessons and chess tutoring in 2014 and in the 4^th quarter of 2015, took piano lessons again. WHO WILL BE PALAU'S FIRST LIGHTNING

     CHESS CHAMP ON JAN. 18, 2016?

 

PALAU Chess Federation will hold its first ever lightning chess championship on Monday, Jan. 18 at Surangel’s Construction Office (former Socio). The suggested venue, Bethlehem Park is not logical as Bethlehem Park will be dark at the late stage of the event which will start at 6pm. Players must pay first his/her registration fee before being included in the pairings for the first round.

                The time control of this fastest blitz chess format is 1 minute for each player to finish the game with 1 second increment. PCF held its first ever blitz chess championship last year with time control of 5 minutes and 3 seconds increment. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. claimed his 2nd of the 4 major chess championships of PCF from Nov. 16, 2014-Dec. 06, 2015.

                The change of date and time control was done to accommodate more Palauan chess players. The bullet chess championship was scheduled on Jan. 11, 2016 with time control of 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment.

                The new ratings of World Chess Federation (FIDE) for the month of January is now available at www.fide.com Palau has 48 chess players listed with Menandro Manuel (1847 rating) still on top although he is not in Palau anymore since Dec. 2014. It’s because FIDE still publish an inactive player’s name for one year. It is expected that Manuel will be out of the list next month and Montel, Jr. will take the no. 1 spot again with 1845, an increase of 5 while Roberto Hernandez (1798) will drop to no. 3 after losing 47 points due to his poor performance in the 2015 Palau National Chess Championship (3 wins, a draw and 5 losses) for 6^th place finish. Unrated and the top 10 qualifier Allan Alcid is now the No. 6 player of Palau due to his superb performance with 1750 rating. He is still in Philippines after going on a business trip in the middle of the 2015 PNCC.

                No. 4 Tito Cabunagan (1779) lost 42 rating points from his 1821 rating. Jeff Balbalosa (1738), who finished 1^st runner-up, gained 30 rating points and now at 5^th spot with 1768. Suringa, Jr. gained 6 rating points and now his 1712 dropped him to 8^th. Candidate Master Bernardo Garcia (1732) dropped from 5^th to 7^th after losing 14 points (now at 1718). Dennis Gonzales (1680) still made it to top 10 at 10^th with his new 1651 rating, losing 29 points. Palau’s first Woman National Master (WNM) Angie Parrado landed to her best ever spot (8^th) after topping the 2015 Palau National Chess Championship’s Women and Junior Division.

                Angelo Salvadora’s initial international rating is an impressive 1643 after scoring 3 points in the Top 10 Division, better than Reserves Division champ No. 14 Felix Oling, Jr. (1571), No. 12 Nilo de Jesus (1591), No. 13 Gonzalo Escapatoria, Jr. (1574), No. 15 Rafael Paloma (1562), No. 16 Josef Karlo Moyet (1556), No. 17 Eugene Labarda (1535) and No. 20 Manuel Mahor, Jr. (1489), who stays exactly the same rating as before.
