              FREE TUTORING

In 2006, I and my wife rented a room at Topside while working at Dragon Tei, Teppan Dragon and Donburi Dragon Japanese restaurants. Among our neighbors are 11 other workers of the said restaurants.

One of them is a cook, Gerald Sison, who asked me to teach him how to play keyboard. I offered him the use of my Yamaha keyboard (PSR 400). Its stand, sustain pedal, power adaptor and music stand were also lend to him. We don’t have any financial agreement of how much he will pay me. I offered it for free because he can’t afford to pay me. It’s my way of helping him. I have given him the formula where he learned to play all the chords in piano/keyboard in just 5 minutes. Now it’s up to him to help himself. All the resources that he needs were there, for free.

For more than 3 months, I haven’t heard him playing that keyboard. When I checked the keyboard, an ashtray was on top of it. Cigarette ashes were scattered on the keys of the keyboard. There’s no cover to keep away the dust and it’s not been used to learn how to play it.

I’m very disappointed with him about the chance that he should have taken for free. MAYBE BECAUSE IT’S FREE THAT’S WHY HE DOESN’T CARE.

Since then, I never teach someone for free. They must spend some amount to learn. To keep them thinking, “I’m spending money for this so I must make sure it’s worth it.”

When I teach the lowest paid workers in Palau, I must charge them with the minimum that I charge just to keep them thinking that it’s not for free but it’s the lowest price I can give.

Although my best students’ payments were being paid by their parents, they are aware that I’m being paid that much for them to learn. Those parents are supportive of their kids’ music progress.

December 09, 2012

After watching the Pacquiao-Marquez 4 boxing match, the meeting was started with Palau Chess Federation Secretary/Treasurer Roberto Hernandez leading a prayer.

Tito Cabunagan and Jose Celiz offered their rented rooms to be the official venue of all 2013 chess tournaments except the 4^thPalau Invitational Chess Championship. Those rooms can accommodate 16 chess players at a time.

The current 2012 PNCC will be finished on Dec. 15 (Sat.) and 16 (Sun.). Players not present will lose by default on the final day.

On the next tournaments, the players from the same company must not play in the last 3 rounds but in the first 3 rounds.

It’s also agreed that the Arbiter’s decision is final and non-appealable.

Different time schedules of players will be agreed by both players one day before their game. The venue is open day and night. It will be the venue if there will be a reservation to use the Conference Room of Palau Royal Resort on Dec. 15 and 16.

Gonzalo Escapatoria offered to make folding chess tables for the 2013 events. His last 2 remaining games with Cyril will be played on Dec. 15.

Hernandez suggested adding the 2013 Calendar in the Certificate of Participation being designed by Jeff Balbalosa.

The Palau Chess Federation’s bank account will be opened next year after amending the By-Laws of PCF during the Annual General Meeting on Feb. 10, 2013.

The Palau Chess Federation's officers and members held a meeting on December 09, 2012 at Tito Cabunagan's residence. A lot of issues have been resolved and a better 2013 Calendar of Events will improve the quality of chess in Palau.

PCF 2013 CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Ø Feb. 10, 2013 Annual General Meeting at Palau Royal Resort

To elect new set of Officers

President (1) Must be a Palauan

2 Vice Presidents, 1 Secretary/Treasurer, 3 Executive Members

Feb. 24-April 21 2013 RAPID CHESS TOURNAMENT (FIDE-RATED)

(ALL TOURNAMENTS OF 2013 -PLAYERS FROM THE SAME COMPANY MUST MEET IN THE

1^ST3 ROUNDS AND NOT IN THE LAST 3 ROUNDS)

Time control – 25 minutes + 10 seconds increment or 30 minutes without increment

20 players will draw a letter (A or B) to know who will be in Group A and Group B.

Top 4 in Group A and B will have a round robin semifinal. Winner of Group A will meet

winner of Group B in the finals.

Tiebreak– winner over the other (Direct Encounter)

The 2^nd tiebreak to be used is Solkoff System. Writing chess notation is optional.

Separate division for kids under 15 years old. They will be playing double round-robin.

The women’s division will have also double round-robin.

May 12-June 16 BLITZ CHESS TOURNAMENT (FIDE-rated)

Time control – Digital (5 minutes + 3 sec. increment)

Mechanical – 10 minutes

FIDE has separate rating now for rapid and blitz chess tournaments. Players with

standard ratings will start from the same rating for the blitz and rapid FIDE rated event.

July 7- Sept. 8 2013 PALAU NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

It’s single round- robin. Time control-90 min. to make 40 moves, another 30 minutes to

finish the game with an increment of 30 seconds starting from move 1.

The top 6 finishers will compete in the 2013 Palau Invitational Chess Championship.

If one or 2 players can’t make it to PICC, he will be replaced by the next one.

Playoffs of the top 8 (2 groups A & B). The winner of A plays vs. winner of B in the finals.

Nov. 17-24 4^TH PALAU INVITATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP

4 players will be invited from Philippines (Rudy Ibanez, Dr. Alfredo Paez, PNG (Joselito

Marcos), Guam (Leon Ryan) and Australia.

Time format – the same as 2013 PNCC.

*The venue of all these tournaments except the invitational, will be held at Tito Cabunagan and Jose Celiz’ residence in Malakal. The place can accommodate 16 players at a time.

· The Arbiter’s decision is final and non-appealable.

Gonzalo Escapatoria will make more folding tables for the events.

THE 2 JUNIORS (JR.) AT CHINESE SINGING CONTEST
Howard Charles, Jr., left, and Jemty Peter, Jr. are the 2 juniors (jr.) contestants of the 2nd Chinese Songs Singing Contest held on Nov. 28 at Sea Passion Hotel. Charles, Jr. won the 2nd place and pocketed $200.00 while Jemty won a special prize. Roberto Hernandez accompanied all 5 contestants with a Yamaha keyboard.

       THAT'S WHY THEY CALL IT
               "REST ROOM"

I WAS asked by a mother of four kids this question: “You play piano at Waves Restaurant for 3 straight hours? You don’t take a rest?”

This reply made her laugh together with her 2 daughters—“I only take a rest when I go to the rest room. That’s why they call it rest room because it’s where people like me take a rest.”

In Philippines, they call it “comfort room” or CR. It other places, they call it“powder room” where the girls put powder on their faces.

In the Refrain of the song “I’ll Be There” by The Jackson Five, it goes like this“I’ll Be There To Comfort You, Build My World Of Dreams Around You…”

When I’m singing it I usually change the first line to “I’ll Be There To Comfort Room,” and the following people have laughed about the change—Santy Asanuma, Aira Jane Torres and Shinji Otsuka.
