   GARCIA, MONTEL MOVE CLOSER

PALAU'S first titled chess player Candidate Master Bernardo Garcia suffered his first loss on Sunday, Nov. 04 to Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. in the resumption of 2012 Palau National Chess Championship held at Palau Royal Resort Conference Room.

But Garcia bounced back from defeat and dealt frontrunner Roberto Hernandez his 2^ndloss of the day and of the event with a masterful handling of Sicilian Defence (Dragon Variation).

The first loss of Hernandez was against Tito Cabunagan where he blundered away his queen for a rook. Hernandez is still leading the Class A division with a 6-2-0 win-loss-draw slate. Garcia (4-1-0) and Montel, Jr. (4-2-0) trail Hernandez throughout the event.

Jose Celiz finally earned a whole point after trouncing Gonzalo Escapatoria in 49 moves of King’s Pawn Opening. The first game on Sunday afternoon was between Dennis Gonzales and Geoff Martin, who was accommodated because Ferdinand Gutierrez (FIDE rating 1567) was pursued by Hernandez to join so that other players who are waiting to join can be accommodated.

Their time control was only 20 minutes for each player to finish the game so that Dennis will not be late to his appointment. He prevailed in 30 moves of Queen’s Pawn Opening.

Nilo de Jesus was present this time and played 3 games, winning all of them. He subdued Mary Frances Lopez in 27 moves of Bird’s Opening; Jeff Balbalosa in 64 moves of another Queen’s Pawn Opening and nipped Luciano Sibayan in 50 moves of another Bird’s Opening.

Ksau Anthony Whipps whips Lopez in 31 moves of Queen’s Pawn Opening to have a 3-2 win-loss card. Lopez suffered another setback from Ksau’s cousin Zachary Techall Whipps in 55 moves of Irregular Opening. Zachary has a 3-2 slate likewise after upsetting Martin.

Lopez is planning to participate in the 2013 Guam World Chess Invitational in February while Garcia is participating in the 2013 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Fiji.

Dan Roldan finally got his first point by outdueling Lopez in 58 moves of another Irregular Opening. Lopez failed to win or draw any of her 4 games after winning 2 in her first day of action last week.

Bheng Codinera Mendoza has shown interest to participate in Palau Chess Federation thrice a year tournaments since 2004 but it never materialized. Last Sunday, Nov. 4, she came with another chess player, Mr. Hilario, who would like to join also if there is remaining slot.

The only way that Bheng can join is if Paz Ngiratechekii will withdraw. After talking with Hernandez last week, Paz is determined to finish this tournament. Lenge Gibbons was not advised of his being allowed to play by his friend and missed last Sunday’s actions. He needs to play as many games as he can to catch up. With 21 players now in the Class B division, each player must play 20 games. This Sunday is the 5^th week and this tournament will conclude on Dec. 02, 2012 (Sunday).

On Saturday, Nov. 10, the Conference Room is not available from 9am – 4 pm. The games were held at PRR Dormitory 1 with CM Bernardo Garcia and Paquito ‘Pax’Suringa, Jr. playing their 2^nd game at 2:30pm. Montel, Jr. came also and he played with Hernandez for their 2^nd game. IT’S PRR VS. PPR! Garcia and Montel, Jr. both work at Palau Pacific Resort (PPR) while Hernandez and Suringa, Jr. both work at Palau Royal Resort (PRR).

THE RESULT – PRR SWEPT PPR! Garcia couldn’t position his bishop like a dragon in their English Opening game and was mated on the 36^th move while Roberto needed 63 moves to outlast Montel, Jr. in their Modern Defence clash.

Mohammad Manik Hossain came at the tournament site and played with Angie Parrado, who missed the 33. … Rf4 winning Manik’s queen. Although 2 pawns down in rook and pawns endgame, Manik was able to draw when they have both a king and a rook.

After their game, Dan Roldan is available for a game or two. He played with Angie while Manik played his official game against Angie’s daughter Angelil. Angie prevailed over Roldan but Angelil lost to Manik.

Special game on Monday afternoon, November 12, 2012 at PRR Dormitory 1 between Mohammad Manik Hossain (1528) and Ferdinand 'Bong' Gutierrez (1567). Bong lost in his first game of 2012 PNCC. Whether he finishes all his remaining 19 games before going home for good to Philippines, his remaining unfinish games will be up to the decision of Chief Arbiter.

PALAU TOURNEY

MY WIFE, another Filipina mother and her daughters, and a Palauan woman (Paz Ngiratechekii), and Filipina Mary Frances Lopez make up the ladies of the ongoing 2012 Palau National Chess Championship.

Florida Hernandez, Angie Parrado and her 2 girls -- 8-year-old Destiny Sisior and 9-year-old Angelil Sisior--, Mary Frances Lopez and Paz Ngiratechekii, will battle it out among themselves and 17 other rated and unrated men (boys) in the single round-robin of 1650 and below category to get their international rankings.

The category's men are Filipinos Jeff Balbalosa, Luciano Sibayan, Jon Manuel Reyes, Dennis Gonzales, Jaime dela Cruz, Dan Roldan , Elpidio Manaligod, Nilo de Jesus, Freddie Gloria (who replaced my wife Flor), Ferdinand Gutierrez and Manuel Mahor, Jr.

Palauan kids Ksau Anthony Whipps, his cousin Zachary Techall Whipps, Geoff Martin, Lenge Gibbons and Bangladeshi Mohammad Manik Hossain completed the cast of 21 players in the Class B division.

The top 8 chessers of Palau composed another group and they will figure in a double round-robin in the annual tournament running from Oct. 13 - Dec. 02, 2012 at the Palau Royal Resort (PRR).

They are Jose Celiz, Gonzalo Escapatoria, Menandro Manuel, Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., Paquito Suringa, Jr., Candidate Master Bernardo Garcia, me, and Tito Cabunagan.

Each player have 90 minutes to finish the game with 30 seconds increment that will start from the first move.

Prizes will be offered to 5 winners of each category. The champion in the rated players group will get a free one-night stay at Palau Pacific Resort.

The 1st runner-up will get a free one-night stay at PRR. Other winners will have a brunch at the two hotels.

In the under 1650 category, the champion and 1st runner-up will get a free dinner for two at the 2 hotels.

ON AUGUST 23, 2008, three Japanese ladies had dinner at Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort in front of the piano – elevated section.

One of them requested me to play jazz music. I played some jazz (especially Bossa Nova tempo) and when I played “Wave”, they are excited.

I played also “The Girl From Ipanema”, “Satin Doll”, “Meditation”, “Call Me”,“There Will Never Be Another You” and even the Japanese jazz song “Memorandum”.

At 9:00 pm, I stopped playing and gave them my card (Xeroxed only at that time). I said to them, “I’ll be playing 2 more hours at Breeze Bar using a keyboard.”

They said that they will proceed to Breeze Bar to listen some more to my music. Halfway to my playing at Breeze Bar, one of those 3 ladies come to me and gave me a CD (a new one which is still in its original package).

That lady also gave me her card. That’s the time when I realized that she’s a Japanese jazz singer and the CD that she gave me was her own recording of jazz songs including “Wave”.

That’s why they are excited when they heard me playing it (instrumental). She just come to say goodbye as there’s no more time for them all to go to Breeze Bar.

After finishing the song that I’m playing when she comes, I take a good look at the card and the CD. Her name is Nao Yasuda and in her beautifully designed card, it only shows her hand wearing a ring in black background and her name Nao Yasuda is written like a signature. At the back, her name in Japanese (Katakana) is written and the words under it are: jazz.vol1nao@docomo.ne.jp 090-9038-5053. In her recording of the album“I’m A Fool To Want You”, the song “Wave” is in there.

THIRD seed Roberto Hernandez subdued Jose Celiz in 31 moves of Danish Gambit to earn his 4^thstraight victory. Jose deviated from capturing the 2^nd offered pawn and pushed the d pawn instead to d3.

Hernandez won the exchange on the 9^th move and held on to that advantage. He is ready to give back the exchange but Celiz blundered a touched piece. He asked Hernandez if he can still move it back but he already let go off the bishop. And even if he still hung on holding it, he should move that touched piece and that will lead to a mate in one.

Mary Frances Lopez finally showed up and played 3 games on Sunday, Oct. 28. She clobbered the Sisior sisters (Destiny and Angelil) but lost her 3^rdgame to Dennis Gonzales, who is now at solo 2^nd place in Class B after trouncing the Sisior sisters likewise.

9-year-old Zachary Techall Whipps won his first game by drubbing neophyte chess player Jon Manuel Reyes in 65 moves of French Defence. The 32-year-old Reyes bounced back from defeat and dealt Destiny Sisior her 4^th loss to have an even 1-1 win-loss slate in his first serious chess competition.

Gonzales completed the sweep of the Sisior family by nipping the mother of Sisior sisters Angie Parrado in 62 moves of King’s Pawn Opening. But Angie took the measure of Ksau Anthony Whipps earlier in the afternoon for a total of 1.5 points in 4 games.

Paz Ngiratechekii, Nilo de Jesus, Jaime dela Cruz, Elpidio Manaligod, Freddie Gloria and Manuel Mahor didn’t show up.

In the Top 8 (Class A) division, Tito Cabunagan neatly handled the endgame of 5 pawns against a bishop and 2 pawns vs. Menandro Manuel and outlasted the skidding Manuel, who was swept for the 2^nd time. He now has 3 wins and 4 losses.

And in the last game of the day, Candidate Master Bernardo Garcia clustered a crucial victory over Cabunagan in 26 moves of English Opening. Hernandez and Garcia are the 2 remaining unbeaten players in their division.

Hernandez and Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. played their 2 games on Oct. 31 at 8:20 am at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1. Both games were Sicilian Defence. Pax deviated in Game 1 on the very 2^ndmove and in Game 2, on the 3^rd move.

In both games, Pax was behind by a whole rook and 3 pawns where he resigned on the 41^st move of both games! DÉJÀ VU IN LESS THAN 2 HOURS!

The 2 victories improved Hernandez’ record to 6 straight wins.

IN THE LATEST DEVELOPMENT – Hernandez thought of an idea to have Geoff Martin join the tournament: He pursued Ferdinand ‘Bong’ Gutierrez (FIDE rating of 1567) to join the tournament even though he is leaving Palau for good on Nov. 27. He will still have more than 4 weeks to play 19 games. Even if he will not finish all his games, those will be declared draws and his registration fee will be waived.

His day off now is Monday and works at 12:00 noon – 9:00 pm (Tuesday – Sunday). Players who are available on this day are requested to play with him at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1 during these available times. If he will win a prize, which he believes he has a chance for the title, it will be given to his brother Ronel, the Purchasing Supervisor of PRR.

Another player was added in the Class B to complete the line-up of 21 players with 7 rated players. He is Lenge Gibbons and he will play as many games as he can on Sunday, Nov. 04 upon the recommendation of Angie Parrado. She came on Sat. Nov. 03 with her 3 daughters and played an official game against Luciano Sibayan. She won in 39 moves of Gioucco Piano. Her daughters, 8-year-old Destiny and 9-year-old Angelil Sisior played their official game with Angelil prevailing after winning his sister’s queen in the middle game and prevailed in 30 moves of Queen’s Pawn Opening.

The only game for the Class A (Top 8) division was between 2^nd seed Menandro Manuel and 5^th seed Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. where Manuel suffered his 5^th loss against only 3 wins. Pax won a piece in the middle game and held on to his advantage and mated the skidding Manuel on the 43rd move of another Queen’s Pawn Opening.

Hernandez, Suringa, Jr. and Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. suggested that on the final day of the event, Dec. 02, (Sunday), the Palau Chess Federation will hold also their Christmas Party after the Awarding Ceremony. Each player is asked to bring one dish for the event.
